Your hometown Nashwauk area is a little further north than Brainerd. But I don't ever remember a brown Christmas before. Close. but that is it.
Has your area up there do you remember Ben having a Brown Christmas up north?
Christmas Eve and Christmas day now there talking a lot of rain and maybe lightning and thunderstorms.

I remember the winter 2011/2012. Gunflint lake froze over December 26 (on the west end of the lake, anyway).
It was wide open Christmas Day and I toyed with the idea of doing a quick paddle to cross off December on my list, but it was a little too choppy for my liking. Wake up the next morning to ice. It was rather exciting, actually, to think a lake that big and deep could create ice overnight.
ANYWAY, fast forward to March 21, 2012, and we had this lovely sunset!
That was the shortest winter I remember of the 30 years I lived up there on the lake.

Yes last couple of days 2012 in March we fished lake trout by canoe on some small lakes up the Gunflint.

I don’t remember any brown Christmas’s there… but I remember it being close anyways. Late seventies I can remember -20 and snowmobiling from the main road on thanksgiving and a few years later it being quite warm… and plucking porcupine quills from my dog. I know I haven’t seen a brown new years…
Highway 2 can be a difference maker. Often you cross it and it’s a whole different world…

It's getting to look like a wet Christmas.
Well, Christmas Eve rain with many areas getting over an inch with more coming and warmth of 47 degrees in Ely and 49 degrees in my hometown it is going to be VERY brown Christmas day with a lot of water on the ice, and in the Brainerd area a few lakes still have a lot of open water.
Maybe like in 2012 I can go canoe camping and lake trout fishing before season closes on March 31.

Mocha: "Check out gunflint.com webcam.. not a cube of ice on the lake, no snow either. Crazy stuff!"
Yes this is crazy. Look at Whiteside Park in Ely-looks like the grass needs mowing. Don't look good for the annual snow scluptures.I missed winter somewhere

Since temps got to the upper 50"s today, I did a test run with the two (new to me) fishing kayaks in the backyard pond. I tested them vs the one I already had. Each one had their pro's and con's. Hopefully one will be sold this spring, unless the daughter decides she needs it.

lateralus: "I know of people ice fishing in Ely today. Be safe!"
Seems like some lakes up North have 10-12" of ice and others are wide open. Gunflint Lake still wide open on their webcam. Round lake with at least 10" still according to Tuscarora's update yesterday. I haven't seen a new update from Sawbill yet but before Xmas they had 8-10", so assuming they lost a few inches they probably still have 6-8" in the South bay at least.
