Apple now has ability to download offline maps with the IOS version 17 update. This will be nice if you are driving to lakes and you have no cell signal. Also, it will work good if you are out on lakes and need to verify your location with your map.

I don’t understand, I’ve been doing this for years with Google Maps, Navionics, and the Garmin app on my iPhone? Is this just for the built in Apple Maps that this is just now being released?

Good to see this as an option. I always have this feature and has saved me more than once! Though Google Maps is far superior to the Apple Maps but use whatever you prefer I suppose.

I’ve downloaded maps in Google maps for driving in Canada when I don’t have cell service. In general, I prefer Apple Maps to Google maps. So, I’m glad to hear I’ll be able to download maps for Apple Maps.

I've used a free app called "Topo Maps" for offline maps. I just did the Sioux Hustler Trail in the BWCA and it had the trail, campsites, portages, and topo lines ...stuff that I don't think Apple or Google Maps have that is particularly relevant for a BWCA trip. I do recommend it.

I haven't seen Topo Maps but I watched a youtube video in which a guy used an app called Avenza Maps which doesn't have base maps on it. This was a free app. The guy then bought the National Geographic digital maps of the Boundary Waters and used them with the app. You can do that right in the app. I just did the same thing. I think it was around $20 for the complete digital National Geographic map set. It looks like a good app. Avenza app can also download all ten Voyageur Maps for free. I did that too. The digital Voyageur maps have all the campsites and portages on them but leaves off some information such as length and difficulty. There is also some other information left off but you can definitely navigate with them. Next year I will use this app and try out both Voyageur maps and National Geographic maps with it.
