I bought a digital camera last year (Canon G3) with a couple extra lenses. I am looking for ideas on what kind of case to use for traveling in the BWCA and other rugged/wet advernturing. I would like to have something that keeps it from getting damaged/wet during portaging/general canoe travel. However, I would also like the case to be of a manageable size so that it is easy to bring along on days trips. I would like to bring the other lenses along, but potentially would considering keeping them in a seperate case for the purpose of keeping the main camera case smaller.

Does anyone have ideas and thoughts on bringing along a protecting a nice camera in the BWCA?

Adam. A friend of mine had Cooke Custom sewing make a custom case for him that he carries all of his equipment in. It is waterproof, made from codura, has carrying straps, waist belt and a place to attach his tripod too. It also has places to store batteries, extra film-if you bring a film camera etc. It works well for him, slid under his seat while paddling. He brings 2 camera bodies, lenses, a Point and shoot plus all the stuff to have those cameras work for a week or more. He is going more digital now, but that probably just leaves more room in the pack as he does not need as much storage for film. I know he has a Point and shoot digital as well as the new D70 from Nikon that is digital SLR that uses existing lenses. Check with Cooke custom sewing for your case needs.
btw-I am not associated with Cooke Custom. But love his stuff.

Hi Steve,

Thanks! Post or email me his contact info. I think I need to contact him about a new tarp as well.

Adam,

Last year I purchased a couple of camera cases from the REI website. One I used for my digital camera, and the other I used for my camcorder. Both are waterproof and seemed to work out quite well, although I was fortunate enough not to drop either in the water, and both felt well-made and rugged enough to ensure years of use as well.

The models I purchased are the Pelican 1150 Case (which I used for my camcorder), and the Otter Box 8000 (for my digital camera).

If you go to www.rei.com and do a search for both "pelican case" and "otter case," you'll find a pretty nice selection to choose from.
