Is it to my understanding that a PMA permit is only required if you're overnight camping in the PMA. Would I need a permit for just a day trip?

Deeznuts, you understand that correctly. Passing through during the day is just fine without the additional permit. Just be aware of time, travel through a PMA is usually much slower unless it is one the few well traveled routes.
