I'm looking for a tall camp chair to bring tripping. I have a Trekology chair that sits 15" off the ground but I still find it to be a bit low, as well as not all that comfortable. Seems like my legs are always creeping forward in it.

I really love my GCI Roadtrip Rocker but it's way too big and heavy for anything but car camping and kid events. I'm trying to find something reasonably tall, affordable, packable and light but am not having much luck.

I used to have one I bought from Ace Hardware many years ago that was nearly perfect, other than being steel framed instead of aluminum. It eventually wore out and I haven't seen one like it since.

Wondering if anybody else has found something they like. It's not that I couldn't use a small chair, it's just one of the luxuries I like to have when camping.

When we trip with my wife, we bring the Helinox Sunset high back chair for her because, like you, she appreciates a little camp luxury. The sunset model sits a little higher than the lower models. Pretty spendy but we were lucky and found one on super steep discount.

I have the Big Agnus Big 6 camp chair (not the big six arm chair) sits about the same as the helinox sunset. I recall seeing it being on sale on the B.A. web site recently. I've had it for about a year and like it. The top cross bar sometimes is in a weird position on the back of my head, but a slight adjustment in how I'm sitting takes care of it, I'm 5'9" for reference. I did find the taller chair with the higher back handy on our last trip as it was easier for my dad to use vs a camp stool, log, or one of the short chairs.

Check out Camp Time Roll a chair. I bought a pair of these when taking my Dad on his only canoe trip 20 years ago when he was 70.

I have been taking these chairs with me since then. I have used helinox which certainly packs nice and small, but for me the roll a chair wins out with the extra height. Nice for sitting in front of the fire grate when cooking. Even tho it is a stool with the backrest I can put my feet out front of me and still lean back somewhat when wanting a recliner position. Won't be as nice as a "full recliner" style chair when wanting that mode but I think it offers a nice compromise of sitting positions. YMMV

They only offered the original size 20 year ago. I see two additional heights available now. I'm 6'4 and pretty happy with the standard height.

+1 HELINOX SUNSET CHAIR.

A few years back when I was at Canoecopia in Madison, WI, I tested a bunch of portable camping chairs. Being over 65 I felt a higher seat back chair was in the cards.

I came back home with a HELINOX SUNSET. Sure it’s a bit heavier and pricier than my old HELINOX Chair One … but it is so much more comfortable for this old fart.

Looking forward to using it in Quetico this coming June.

Camp Time Roll a Chair. Nice height, easy to get in and off, and the backrest actually provides legit support though it doesn’t look like it would. Super easy setup. My favorite portable chair so far.

I had never heard of the Roll-a-Chair. I really like that it's made in USA.

The Big Six is on sale for $129, which is more than I was looking to spend, but not outrageously so for something with an all-metal frame.

The Sunset looks to only be 14" off the ground, so I think I'm between the Big 6 and Roll-a-Chair.

Thanks for the ideas!

How about the Sunset with the XL rocker feet as an option? That would offer some additional seat height and maybe a foot towards your Roadtrip Rocker. I love mine.

I went ahead and ordered the Roll-a-Chair. I'm 6'3" but still went with the 19" so my son can use it too. If I like it I may order another one or two, maybe the short version for my wife and daughters. I like the idea of a more upright chair to compliment the lower reclined Trekology chair. Not sure if I'd like it as my only chair but I'm never by myself anyway.

I'll report back what I think of it when I get it.

I use the Roll-a-chair. I like the height and no arms, which makes it nice for sitting while cooking at a campfire or burner.

Those are good pictures. While the front of the Big Six is quite a bit higher, and should offer better thigh support, there isn't near as much difference in butt height as I would have thought.

I have a small Coleman chair. Extremely light weight. I think it was called a Woodsman or something like that. Could be used as a chair or a stool. And the best part - really inexpensive.

+1 on the Big Agnes Big Six chair... There are on sale for just over $100 at various places.. Check Camp Saver, MooseJaw etc..

IMHO.... Stay Away From Any Chair That Has Plastic Where The Legs Attach!!!!

Bought this a few years ago and it far exceeded my expectations. Lightweight, sturdy, packs up reasonably and can be assembled in less than a minute. Oh and did I mention comfortable...? Brought it camping and my buddy tried it and bought one immediately. Very stable and sturdy and seriously, extremely comfortable unlike most of the other lightweight camp chairs I have tried. Has been on 4 or 5 BWCA trips with me and still good as new. Started bringing it on car camping trips a couple years ago because it is more comfortable than any of the bigger chairs I used to bring when there is no concern about bulk or weight.

Highly recommended, not ultralight but lightweight. Worth it for the comfort and sturdiness. Appears to be sold out at this site but probably available somewhere...

Hitorhike camp chair

Here is a video showing assembly...$32 bucks a piece plus shipping. This chair is worth 75 to 100 bucks, seriously.

Hitorhike chair assembly

Here they are setup at Snipe Lake. At first I thought the back was inclined too much but it is perfect. One of my best gear purchases in a while.

+1 on the taller Helinox chairs.
For years we actually took folding aluminum lawn chairs and would hear the envy
of those passing out camp. "They've got lawn chairs"! Bulky for sure but do keep packs off the bottom of the canoe. The legs don't sink into the ground either. If not portaging much or base camping might be a less expensive option.

I have an older version of this chair(Green & unpainted aluminum) that I picked up a garage sale and it is my goto tripping chair. It's a bit bulkier than these newer style chairs, but I find it straps to the outside of my pack just fine and weighs almost nothing. It is also ready to go, no assembly required, simply unfold. Sits a bit higher than modern chairs and more upright, so I find it better for camp chores such as cooking.

I received my Roll-a-Chair yesterday. It is definitely more of a stool with a back than a typical camp chair. Which is good and bad. Easy to set up and take down. Light for its size but bit bulky when packed. Not the most stable chair but since you are upright I don't think that will be an issue. The height of the regular 19" is just fine for me at 6'3".

All in all I like it. It will be a good addition, but as I suspected, I don't think I'd want it as my only chair and will go with something else for the kids.

Just an update, I did end up buying the Big Agnes Big Six as well and brought that, the Roll-a-Chair, and the Trekology Helinox knock-off on the trip. The most used chair in camp was the Roll-a-Chair even though the Big Six was more comfortable. We found it's usually more practical and convenient to be sitting more upright. The regular 19" size was a good height for me at 6'3".

I take back what I said before, in the future if I only bring one chair it will be the Roll-a-Chair.

I am shocked! The Roll-a-Chair is so "non-techie", "non-trendy", etc. I am surprised that someone finds it useful.

I do most of the cooking, either fire or stove, and find the Roll-a-Chair by far the best. Sits high, sturdy, no arms and easy to cook while sitting.

If you try a Helinox Sunset on one trip, your will never take anything else!
