I'm looking for a few suggestions from everyone on what might make a good trip (4 or so days) with an 8 yr old in early June. I did this a few years back with my other boy and did the number lakes up to Insula. Unfortunatly I'm getting started pretty late in the season so that is full up for the days i have open.

more detail....
Looking for a trip with a few portages but not too many or too long since I'm the one who will be carrying everything. (I guessing triple portage would be expected). I can probably get the outfitters i use to help us if there is a long start/end portage though.

The goal is to get out and have fun and turn him on to getting outdoors away from gameboys and computers.

thanks for any thoughts in advance....

If you let me know what day you are entering and/or which permits are available we could help. I assume you are looking for a trip with fewer, possibly easier portages, good fishing and not real big lakes that may be dangerous crossing. Let me know what permits are available the day you want to enter and/or which date you want to enter and I can look and I'll give you a couple ideas. Also let me know if you prefer Ely side or Gunflint side. Because you went in numbered lakes already I assume it is Ely side.

If you want to go in close to Ely, there are several available dates still open for Snowbank. I am going in there on June 20th and going to the Thomas/Fraser area... so I have researched different things and ways to go. From there you can go to Disappointment, only 140 rod portage or go to Parent and then Disappointment... two 80 rod portages. Then there are just short portages into other lakes... A lot of opportunities to do different things... and a beautiful waterfall between Cattyman and Gibson Lakes. Just a thought... Good luck with whatever you choose... I love to see the kids outdoors... instead of in front of the computer! Another note... Disappointment has some good smallmouth fishing just the thing to keep the young ones going. Take care and God Bless...

Got a question: Why can't your eight year old help w/ some of the gear? You may need to resize you luggage so they can help, but that is part of the fun, working together, right?
