Anyone with advice about winter access to the Superior Natl Forest and/or the BWCA? We hope to do some camping soon and know nothing about the area in winter. Thanks.
You can try Pine Lake in the Far NE "corner" of BWCA. (Access #68). Turn off Hwy 61 at Arrowhead trail in Hovland. Take Arrowhead Tr. to the McFarland Lake boat launch/Border Route Trailhead. It is a couple miles trek across McFarland to the Pine Lake access. There may be open water where McFarland connects to Pine, however there is a short portage across the peninsula just to the east of the water crossing. Other Suggestions near the Gunflint are Bearskin (you can park at the lodge for a fee and trek in, the BWCA boundary cuts the NE tip of the lake and there are portages to a couple BWCA lakes who's name escapes me at the moment.) or Brule lakes. I'm not sure if the road to the Brule access is clear or not. You can always call the FS office near where you want to put in and see what they recommend.
I have gone winter camping to many spots in the BWCA - always a great time. If I am not mistaken, all entry points with a parking lot are plowed so you can park and snowshoe or ski in. I always call the Park Service to be sure, before I take the long drive up north. They know them all.
