I was told that there is a 1/2 mile portage from Seagull to Alpine lake. But on the map it looks like they are conected by water any info would be great!! We wil be the May 22 thanks Fred

There is water connecting the two lakes, but it is rapids, and I recall it not to be passable by water. There is a good rise in elevation from Seagull into Alpine. You may see a portage next to these rapids on a good map as well, and its appear short, but I went through it 2 summers ago and the portage was poorly kept and a tough trail. Not the way to go in my opinion. Then there is a 105 rod portage into Alpine which many people take.

The other route which many people take into Alpine is to take the 20 rod portage into Rog Lake, and then a 64 Rod portage into Alpine. Both pretty good trails. There is pretty good eye fishing around the points of the islands on Alpine.

I would also recommend an early start on Seagull. This is a long lake, and you can run into some pretty rough water once you pass threemile island. The wind tends to kick up in the afternoon creating the wave, and the campsites on Alpine can be in demand as well.

The suggestions above are all good. My one trip we went in through Seagull we took the 105 rod portage. It is not a very dificult portage with only slight elevation change. This would be the way I would recommend. Watch the wind and if it is kicking up stay on the east side of the island for shelter and then head across to the portage. You will make better time, be fresher and the scenery is awesome. Enjoy your visit and do not worry about those portages. All the portages in that area (Alpine to Jasper, Alpine to Red Rock, Jasper to Ogish) they are all pretty easy. Not until you hit the portage Mueller to Agamok and points south and back east does it start to make you work real hard. The other tough one in that area is Eddy to South Arm Knife. Not very long but it is pretty steep downhill all the way at least.

Definitely see the portage between Alpine and Jasper. There is a nice waterfall along the portage. Also go see Agamok gorge off the kek trail from the portage Mueller to Agamok and the waterfalls from Eddy into Knife. Great scenery and pictures. If you want to head that way and need more info repost or e-mail me. I have entered this area from Seagull and through Saganaga and Red Rock Lake. It is a great area you will enjoy.

Time? With wind in your face as it always is in mine, about 3-5 hours... but that said, Seagull's a big lake with a lot of open water... Weather can really have an influence on this. If it's calm and smooth as glass, lean tward 3 hours... But if it's windy, it could take you 5+ depending on gut's, stability of your boat, and stamina.

I once heard the Ojibwa considered the Western wind up there a spirit... I never really thought of it that much till paddling up there... going around an island or bend in the lake thinking "Cool, the winds not going to be in my face now" only to find that it is. But I love every minute of it.

Hey Bog Glad to see you like Waterfalls too... That is a cool picture, this is one I took of the falls between Cattyman and Gibson... can't wait to get back there... I use it as my back ground on my computer where I can see it everyday...
