Other than Piragis, does anyone know of anybody that rents out relatively small (1 or 2 person) canvas tents with little stoves around Ely??????

Closest I have heard of is White Woods Outfitters in Duluth. Link through empirecanvasworks.com.

I rented from WWO last year with no problems. Both oufitters use Snowtrekker tents I believe. Also used their tobaggans and stove.

I also rented through White Woods and had a great time. I wouldn't call the tent a one or two man tent but I think he has smaller ones. Just remember when you bring one of these tents along you will be using a sled. So check out pulk's and sleds. If you have any questions post it on the forum here and someone will help.

Good luck and have fun.

There are a lot of questions about winter tents on here so I'll jump in with my thoughts on canvas tents for winter camping in the boundary waters. If you go when it is -20 a hot tent is great. However, I have found that going camping in the second half of March when the weather forecast looks warm is the way to go. The days are longer and the temps really aren't that much different than they can be in in early May or Oct.

Once the stove goes out in a canvas tent you will be colder than if you are sleeping in a little shelter with snow walls and a tarp for the roof. Canvas tents and a stove are a lot of heavy gear if you are going in 5 miles or more. It really depends on the goals of your trip though. I go to fish and have found that cutting and splitting wood for the stove consumes a lot of fishing time. With a nice fire outside in the evenings I can burn big pieces of wood that last longer and don't require much cutting and splitting.
