I would like some thought on the following canoe:

http://www.bellcanoe.com/products/canoes/northstar.html

I'm thinking about getting this new and I've found a pretty good deal on it. I'm looking at a Royalax (spelled wrong) model that has the weight at 64lbs. Does anyone have any imput?

thanks,
steve

Bell canoes are great canoes. I have not personaly paddled the one you list. If there is any way to test paddle it do it. I have paddled a Magic solo and the Northwind tandem which is a foot longer.

It looks like they might be discontinuing the Royalex layup, as it is no longer listed on the web site, maybe that is why it is on sale. Royalex is a good layup for rivers and rocks. Very durable. At 64 lbs it is a little heavy but not too bad. It is a good compromise between the ultra lightweight of kevlar-but at a reasonable price (weight vs. price). This canoe will serve you well for years. It has plenty of capacity for two plus gear for week long trips. I would not recommend it for three plus gear for a week.

Bells are known for good looks and being pretty fast. They make a quality product. I would encourage you to see if you can test drive it before you buy just to make sure you and your partner are comfortable in it. It looks like it would be failry stable, but even that is a personal call.

Good for you. This canoe was made for the BWCAW. Tracks well, is fast, beautiful and the length gives you more room for gear. I have paddled a kevlar version of this boat and enjoyed it. Again it is very durable, a little heavy but at a good price compared to kevlar. Try it out if you get a chance and I am sure you will enjoy it and travel with her for many years to come. Nice canoe.
