It's short of 30 miles, I believe the Sawbill Trail out of Tofte gets you there. Pavement turns into graded gravel. Kawishiwi is one of my favorite easy trips. You can stay on a lakeside campground or enter the BWCA and camp on the lake. The advantage of campground are several. No portaging unless you want day trips. You can can have glass, cans, etc. (not on the water)(day permits at landing). Early mornings generally bring moose and I saw the biggest turtle ever on the island site. Good fishing for small walleyes and perch as the lake is only 14' deep. If you stay there, check out the trail away from the sites on the other side of the landing entry. It is about a mile long and leads to another lake hidden in back (can't recall the name) It is a very nice hike and shore fishing is ok and there might be a canoe/boat back there. Worth checking out. Kawishiwi is also a great destination for a cast and blast weekend is September. As long as you don't mind generators running from the Moose hunting RV's.
