Do any of you guys bring your dogs with?

Do they sleep in the hammock with you?
or - what else do you do with them?

Yes and yes.
When I hike or backpack with him, he's usually on a retractable leash attached with carabiner to a skijoring belt. Last year was his first BW trip with my sons & DDIL. I tried the leash setup, but soon abandoned it. Too hard when trying to portage with multiple paddles instead of trekking poles. He did great staying with the group on trail.
He weighs 19# and is a great hammock sleeping partner. I can hardly get it set up before he jumps in.

I took my border collie twice in the past few years but switched to a 2 man tent. Now, I decided I want to be a dedicated hanger so opted to buy her a tent while I will be hanging above her.
this is what I got her
I'm pretty impressed with it. It's got lots of room for a 50 lb. dog and great ventilation. It weighs 1.8 lbs. The drawback is only the floor is waterproof so my tarp will have to be over it.

Did a search over on hammockforums.net and found this. This way you could be in one enclosed space with your dog. And no need for a bugnet on the hammock.

What a great idea! If my pup tent doesn't work out I'll have to get that.

No dogs - more wildlife.

I guess my hesitation is if my dog hears wildlife - would she try to bust out of the bug net, and tear a hole.... hmmm...

I think for the first few hammock trips we'll skip the dogs, but may bring them on future trips.

Funny - I've never camped without a dog before, but we're heading to heavy wolf territory - so in the long run I'm probably better off w/o them anyways.

I think that's generally true. Fortunately for me my dog is very docile unless she is playing with a frizbee or tennis ball. She's very quiet and doesn't chase wildlife. She won't even chase a squirrel.

There was this one time though on Birch Lake in the Q. The sun was setting and we were sitting high on an island that was very close to the mainland. In the quiet dusk we watched three beavers swim by. She just watched.

Then, suddenly we hear a rustling in the trees across the water. Then more rustling and it was getting closer. We couldn't see it but it was definitely a large animal walking through the trees.

I took this pic of Luna as she intently focused on the sound. Suddenly she let out a single loud bark that echoed across the lake. The sound was then gone. So yeah, I probably missed seeing a moose coming to the lake edge. Still a fascinating experience.

Is there a particular way you teach the dog to stay in the hammock?

I prefer hammock camping (so much more comfortable than a tent floor). This year will be my dog's first trip to the BWCA - I wasn't intent on bringing him while he was still intent on acting like a puppy. But he's two this year, has mellowed out considerably and learned a solid recall. He's had a year to learn to behave in the canoe, is accustomed to a life jacket, and is trained to carry a dog-pack nicely. I just haven't decided what to do about sleeping arrangements for a 55lb golden-something. He might just end up in the tent with the non-hangers.

Maybe you can start now and put up a hammock for him to sleep in? Maybe sling it close to the ground and put his blanket in it. Can you lay in it close to the ground and have him get in with you?

You might check into that tent I'm going with for my dog. It's 1 and a half lbs. and on ebay for around $65. Lot's of room for a 55 lb. pup.

nope - just like unleashing an addict in the wilderness. They mess up everything and scare away everyone. Pets belong at home or the doggy hotel while you enjoy the quiet and solitude of the BWCAW.

We went camping with our dogs this weekend, and have decided to leave them home for the BWCA. We don't want our dogs to hear a chipmunk etc and then try to tear through our bug net etc.
