Hello all!

Been up to the BWCA 3 times for 4 days each and have always entered at Lake One (30). Planning another trip during the last week of August with a group size of 5-7. One or two relatively inexperienced paddlers and the rest are hardy pioneers like myself.

This year I am hoping to make it to Fishdance to see the indian glyphes. Just wondering if anyone has been there and can provide any comments.

Thanks!

Shane

I think so.

Some people don't really get a kick out of it and others do. My group has been going well out of our way to cross lakes with picto's since our first experience on Fishdance.

I think the Fishdance picto's are some of the better ones to see in the BW. There are several panels along the cliff (as indicated on the maps) at about head level with a variety of drawings.

If nothing else, the fishing on Alice before you portage over is worth the trip alone.

We camped on fishdance years ago, nice spots and the Northerns realy bite down at the end of the lake. It's quite at night, but during the day there is some traffic of people coming to see the pictos, but they go back where they came from at night.

I never made it to the Picto's, but did get my wife to paddle into Alice. We base camped on insula.

I think the fishing is pretty good on insula as well as Alice. Just beware of the wind on alice it can churn that lake up!

Yes it is. I have been there once myself. It's pretty neat. Also if you camp on the lake there is a very high chance you will not see anyone.

I don't know how adventurous you are, but these photos I found on Flickr sure make me want to visit Fishdance sometime before I get old:

I don't know if the above photo is some idiot jumping off of the rocks on Fishdance or not---I have depth sounded the water out in front of the pictos---two reasons why I would not recommend that activity. Right out in front of the cliff is a reef--and close by the cliff the water is only 7 feet deep---there is probably a sweet spot deep enough to jump off of the cliff, but it is an accident waiting to happen

I think timatkn is right. That does not look like it is happening on fishdance.

Check out the Flickr link--it says Fishdance on it. I corresponded with the guy (Nick Ciske) a bit last year asking him about it.

He said they dropped some kind of anchor to check the depths before they jumped. I believe he said they are jumping right where the pictos are.

I wish I still had the email, but I don't.

I do agree with timatkn...it does scare me, but it does look pretty sweet.

I ate lunch on those cliffs once, it was pretty cool. It's an inredible vista up there.

After looking at it again I think it is the fishdance pictos---I stand by my depth sounding measurements and saying that these guys got lucky---dropping an anchor as a way to see how deep THE WHOLE area below the rocks is for jumping---laughable at best :)
I'm sure it was a blast---I love jumping off of cliffs too, but this is not one I would jump off of---I like being able to walk too much :)

Just wanted to thank everyone who chimed in. Good information that whets my desire to make it there.

I have a pretty motivated crew, so barring the unforeseen, we'll have a trip report to share our experiences come September.

Fishdance pictos are the first ones I ever saw in the Bwca- they are well worth a visit. Stop and have lunch on the top, like LT said it's a nice view.
