I was there in 1992 and fished for 3 days. Big northerns and lots of nice size smallmouth and walleyes. Murdoch was insane for topwater smallies. We went in June and the fishing was the best I ever experienced.

Thanks everyone! We'll spend some time looking and may have to make a trip to Keewatin for those trout! We plan on hitting other pictos between kahshahpiwi and Kawnipi as well. Thanks again for the info.

P.S. Montgomery Lake and Creek pictographs are worth it as well, if your up for a grueling hike (2008 trip report).

Jakebait is correct, they are not very easy to find. It was a little rough water the day we passed by them so I don't have any pictures. I remember one of the characters in a canoe had horns... which is different.

Yes, the fishing is worth it. Caught walleyes on every bait in the box. We found the pictographs on the rock wall near the entrance to Kawa.
They were faint, but they were there right near the marking on the map. I believe they are difficult to locate due to the fact that they are not on one large rock ledge. The rock ledge is quite jagged and requires some searching. They are faint enough that you could look right at them and not see them if you weren't really trying hard. The pictos on Keewatin were much, much better. As was the trout fishing;)

We have had trouble locating the pictos on the main body of the lake and I believe they aren't very good ones. The numerous pictos and petros on Agnes are well worth checking out.

Thank you everyone for the info. Any word on the Pictograph's up there?

We hav 10 days of trip time, so that won't be an issue. I've heard good things about the walleye fishing in Kawnipi.

Anyone care to shed any light on this?"

Kawnipi has ZERO walleyes. We caught them all.

Awesome lake. Great fishing! You will love it. Be prepared for wind! ;)

Loved the trip in and the base camps we used on 2 separate trips. Even my daughter caught two fish on one cast there. Were small but she did not care. Plan on using Agnes on a light wind day for a 3-4 hour paddle for strong paddlers there. Can be very tough into a good strong headwind.

I just read an older trip report by Hexnymph on this site. He spoke of many pictographs along the way and his group did go through Kawnipi. Here's the link.

Fantastic news. Does anyone have information on the Picto's on that lake? I've tried seeing some before (on other lakes) and never had any success. If any one has descriptions, pictures, and locations for them that would be great as well.

I concur it's a great lake and worth the effort to get there.

Absolutely. With ten days you can include that lake from any entry point. One of the best walleye and pike lakes in Quetico.

One of my favorites.
