I was on East Bearskin over New Year's and the ice was doing great. Got a dusting of snow, but not enough to make going over portages easy with a sled.

Great idea for the plan B! I might switch to angleworm trail or something if I'm hiking. Fingers crossed for snow!!!

Hey! Good questions. I am a wilderness guide in Ely. It's an odd year for sure. I also have a trip planned for early Feb out of Moose Lake. For now, I'm leaving things as is and hoping we get snow (and solid ice). My plan B is to camp with our Snowtrekker on one of the dispersed sites within the Superior National Forest (outside of the BW) and do some day hiking/relaxing.

Hey all, I've winter camped a few times now, and I'm planning on doing a mid Feb trip this winter. Ive reserved a snowtrekker tent, and my plan is either somewhere on or beyond Slim Lake or Fall Lake.

Question: with the unseasonably warm weather, do these destinations still make sense, or would there be a better place to go (in regard to ice thickness, snow on portage trails, etc.)?
