Great report. We're doing a similar trip this weekend. Except we're going to continue on to Rove/Watap/Mountain lakes.

How much was the tow across Gunflint?

How was the wind that day?

Thanks.

We experienced wind pretty much the entire trip, which was good because it was soooo hot . . . but on more than one occasion, we remarked how hard it would have been to be paddling on Gunflint Lake. We had some big water on Rose Lake, but stuck closer to the shoreline and didn't have any problems.

The second day, when we reached Rose, you have to travel north and then east and then south-east to get the larger portion of the lake. The first portion of the paddle, which led us north was really difficult because of wind and what seemed to be current. The lake isn't very deep in that area. We all commented on how fatigued we were when we reached the point where we could finally start traveling east. I know the Laurentian divide is in that area . . . does anyone know if that has anything to do with our troubles?

The tow was $25 per person through Dick Smith and Gunflint Pines Resort. Very convenient and I don't know how his fee compares, but it was well worth it for us!

My husband and I brought the kids up to Mountain > Watap > Lake. Our trip report is at:

It was fun to have these two trips overlap a bit (but not too much!). It's such a great area.

Excellent report, Barbeaver! I'm going to print it out and paste it in my journal!

getting a tow IS cheating...you do know that, right? :) Jan

We struggled with the tow idea . . . for about a minute. I did say that we're aging, didn't I?

Hey, Bonnie, good to hear from you. Now that you're on, I have to admit that the photos in my photo gallery for this trip folder are all from Bonnie (bjreimann)!

The portage between Rose and Rove is so fun, you should make that for your next trip.

Fun in a "challenging" way, or fun in a "can't stop giggling" way? Isn't it like a bazillion rods? I have a MacKenzie map and it shows 291 rods, then another 87 to Daniels and then 337 to Rose. So when I first looked at that portage a month or more ago, I thought it was 291 to the Border Route Trail and then another 337 to Rose. Or maybe it's 291 all the way to Daniels and 337 all the way to Rose.

Actually I did the portage from Rove to Daniels a few weeks back with my husband and kids and loved the portage. It seemed less than 291 rods. It brought us through wildflower fields, raspberry and blueberry groves, pine forest, bog . . . everything! And the plant diversity was much greater on this portage than any of the other portages on our trip - probably because of the east-west orientation. Is the portage to Rose similar?

I was kidding, the portage the rest of the way to Rose is pretty terrible, wet, and long.

Great report! I am heading up there in October and was looking for campsite info on either Rose or South Lakes. Thanks! Did you do the "voyageur ceremony" at the Height of Lands Portage? I myself am looking forward to the "high wine" part of the ceremony.

Yes, we did our little ceremony on the Height of Land portage, but it was a pretty easy portage, so I think the ceremony is better suited for the Stairway!
