We did the same trip as you, as far as the first few days went anyway, last year in July. We started at Mudro and camped at Boot, much like you did. I know what You mean by the Beartrap river being so winding. We noticed that we had skipped that 35 rod portage on the Beartrap as well. I think it was because of this large beaver dam. Like you said, after you hit Sunday lake, it gets easier going, although the put in to that bay in Iron Lake was a little tricky for us last year having some rain. We went down through the Horse river on our way out though, a little different from your trip. Here is the dam last year:

thanks for the report -- the Beartrap River is one of my favorite areas of the BWCA. we went from Angleworm to Beartrap to Sunday to Sterling to Stuart and out the Stuart River in 2004 and then last year we went in at the Moose River then looped through Agnes to Stuart to Sterling to Iron to Rush to Stuart and out the Stuart River.
Canoe Dude -- what day was that picture taken of the huge dam? It looks like we got pictures on similar days:
The picture was taken August 1, 2006.
Also, here's one of the put-in to Peterson Bay:

End of July 2006, probably the 31st but not positive. Did remember getting a brief shower that day, only lasted like an hour, unfortunately it was during about the time we hit the Peterson Bay portage, making all those slanted rocks a little tricky to negotiate. Looked to us like that the water level in that bay was way down, maybe another result of that huge beaver dam.

Great report!
I know that if I would of had the chance to take a trip like that with my grandfather, I would make sure it was not my last!
I'm guessing that you got him hooked, and you guys will be making another trip, even if he has to travel halfway around the world! :)

Hey thanks for a nice report. Sorry to hear that you encountered some unprepared groups. But it sounds as if you had a great experience with the grandson, hopefully something will work out to allow you to keep having these trips in the future.
