Excellent report! Snowbank can be a real handful when the wind's whippin across the lake. Late September/early October is my favorite time to be in the Wilderness. Reading about the "midday shadows" made me think back to our fall trip into Kekekabic two Septembers ago...one of the most well-lit nights I've ever experienced. Thanks for the great report!

Joe,
Thanks for the trip report. I enjoyed it very much. Since I have a permit for Snowbank this August, I would have enjoyed it more if you said that Snowbank was quiet and you were able to paddle across without any incident. Then again, I suspect that you would have liked that to have been the case too. Oh well, they aren't stories if everything goes right.
Thanks again!

Great report. I've made that trip from Boot to EP 27 twice. The first time was the worst (it was my first BWCA trip too) -- luckily, I was with some strong and more experienced paddlers. The second time I did that route, we hit Snowbank much earlier in the day, around 7:30AM, and the wind wasn't nearly as bad.
Lafayette, we're here.

Great report. We had same experience on Snowbank and wind. It's a dicey trip across to the safety of the island.
Main reason forreplyis that I flatten the top of logs at campsites. Takes less time than you think. Actually rebuild camp site furniture on winter trips to kill time waiting for "flags" to pop. Glad you enjoyed it. Newer logs have actual cup holders carved in.

Waldo,
Thanks for your reply. I just had to give my friend a hard time for all of his effort. He really did appreciate the flatter sitting spots. In May, we took his 10 year old son up to the BWCA via Farm Lake for his first trip. Apparently the urge to flatten the tops of logs is hereditary. I'll mention the cupholders to him at the risk of never getting him out on the lakes to fish.

Your report brought back memories of heading west into a strong west wind on Snowbank...thank goodness for the shelter of the island which made for a bit longer paddle but a much more pleasant experience.
