I would say that they are worth the extra cooking time, especially if you are planning a long day on the water. Steel cut oatmeal has a lower glycemic index (meaning a longer burning energy source) than traditional outmeal and especially more than the sugar laden flavored outmeal.
If you combined the steel cut outs with a "fruit stew" you would get instant energy from the "fruit stew" and long burning benefits from the oatmeal!

quote serenityseeker: "While the health benefits are worth it to at least give the steel cut oats a try, I haven't been able to get past the texture. Maybe it was the wrong brand, but mine seemed gritty. "
I find they need a slow cook for about 20 minutes. They will be cooked perfectly and not gritty, don't forget to add the salt! I have done steel cut in the BWCA, just bring it to a boil and then set it to the side of the campfire grate and let it slow cook.

My wife has a recipe that she cooks in the crock pot that is pretty good so I went and looked on the package. It says that you need to simmer 25 – 30 minutes. Mite have to give it a try.

quote KevinL: "Wondering how this would work to make Hudson Bay Bread out of?"
I've been making Hudson Bay Bread for years and have tried (I think) every option for oats. It's been my experience that HBB is best made with Minute Oats. The fine texture and smaller flakes of Minute Oats helps bond the bread together better than the larger flakes in the long-cooking oats.

We take steel cut oats all the time. They're wonderful! Keeps you regular and it fuels you through the whole morning! We take the oats and put water in them the night before. We double bag to make sure nothing leaks. We then hang it up in the bear pack overnight. Come morning, you only have to heat it up and cook for a very short time. Steel cut oat cookies are great too! Throw some cranberries in with the cookies and you have a wonderful snack during the day.

Well I made a half batch of Hudson Bay Bread with the Steel Oats. Ground the oats in the blender first. They are a heavy pan of bars. Son has been working the pan away and then said, “Dad you didn’t want to freeze these for the trip did you?”
They should make a feller regular.

At home we'll take enough for the week and cook it on Sunday night...then it's a quick 60 sec microwave in the morning. Throw a tsp of maple syrup on top...yessir!
I like the idea about soaking it overnight...I'll have to try that!

soak the oats before turning in. The next morning bring them to a boil for a couple of minutes. remove from heat. Go fishing. When you return warm next to the fire adding a hand full of dried fruit. Finish up coffee, take about the ones that got away and dish up the oats. I like adding maple syrup or brown sugar.
