The first time in BWCA was in early seventy as a Boy Scout. Scoutmaster loved country ham, and so did we. We carried in a 3 gal. aluminum stockpot and a 12-15 lb. sugar cured ham. There were eight of us, so it was carved on all week, then made with dried speckled cranberry beans. Absolutely super! The pot doubled up as a dishpan, water boiler etc. We ate beans that night and most of the last day. Of course there were eight to share the load and a pontoon plane flew us to a Basswood island. 100 ft. carry. We did take it on an overnight sidetrip once. We fought over who had to carry it, and it even went over Wheelbarrow falls in a canoe that later looked like an accordian. I can still remember the scoutmaster making 3 dives to salvage it after the passengers were safely on shore. I can still see that ham falling out of that grumman about ten feet up. We towed the canoe back empty like a broken banana with that ham in the stern seat. The beans were worth it, but the return pilot needed a gas mask, and told us all so too on the second round . Ham and beans; just a thought for a large party. Ahh what a trip for a young teenager. I'll NEVER forget it. I can still eat ham 3 days a week, but the portages.....
