I'm actually dehydrating some hamburger right now. I'm wondering of some uses for it beyond the obvious hamburger. I'm thinking what kind of soups or other meals you can make with it. I'm sure it would be nice once all the fresh food is gone. I think I could make chili with it. Anyone have and recipies for it?

Tacos! yum yum.

And hamburger helper, sure it's not that healthy, but it's hearty after a day of paddling.

Mix in with Uncle Ben's long grain and wild rice (all you have to do is boil water)--yummy. This is also good with pouch chicken.
Can also use to make pasta dishes.

Beef stroganoff!
Dried hamburger, mushrooms, celery, onions, powered sour cream, noodles and spices as desired. Re-hydrate the dried burger, shrooms, celery, and onions. When ready to cook, add water, bring to a boil, add noodles, boil till noodles are cooked. Drain off most of the water and add powdered sour cream. Stir, heat add spices and extra water as desired.

Butthead,

Where do you find the powdered sour cream? I have been looking for it for several years now with out any luck. The only place I could find it was in a box of instant potatoes but did not want to buy the box just for the sour cream packet. Thanks.

Look at the Lipton and Knorr Side Dishes, and other such things (like Dirty Rice, etc). Nearly all of them lend themselves to adding either foil packaged chicken or dehydrated hamburger. they make a nice one pot meal. One package is good for two hearty appetites.

Ditto on all Hamburger Helpers. You may not want to have it all the time back home, but for the week or so you're in the BW it's pretty hard to beat for ease, convinience, and variety.

Bear Creek dehydrated chili with hamburger added is good. You can make it in the woods and throw in dehydrated burger there or make it ahead at home and dehydrtae everything. Any of the Bear Creek soups are good up there.

I also like to make some spaghetti sauce and dehydrate it before the trip or bring a powdered spaghetti sauce mix along with the noodles. Throw some dehydrated burger in the sauce to give it a little more taste and food value. Have a cache lake garlic fry bread and/or a fresh lettuce salad with Italian dressing if early in the trip. Great meal, light weight and mmm, mmm good.

I also agree with Lipton or Knorr side dishes with chicken, tuna or salmon foil pouch. I pack of Lipton Noodels with a pack of chicken is enough for 2 people for dinner.

Hamburger helper is good too, but one box will not serve four in the woods-more like 2-3.

These meals are less expensive than store bought freeze dried and taste better. You will be about the same weight but you will use more fuel so you will need to carry more fuel. I personally do not mind carrying an extra 4-6 ounces of fuel to eat something that tastes better and costs less. I also actually have fun dehydrating foods before a trip. Its one way to feel like I am already on the trip in some ways.

This is an easy and flexible recipe. (as well as cheap) It works for a solo, or 2-4 people, just keep adding burger and noodles. Along the lines of Hamburger Helper.

1 - envelope Lipton Onion Mushroom dried soup
1/4 tsp or so of thyme
1 - clove garlic chopped up in the field
dehydrated burger - equivalent of 1/4 to 1/3 lb for 1 person up to 1 lb for 4.
Noodles. Simmer the burger in some water, add the dried soup and some more water, simmer some more, add noodles and more water, eyeball it all until it all looks/tastes right. Good stuff.
