Tonight I made instant Jello pudding with dried milk and room temp water. The directions call for cold milk. I was not sure if it would set up.

It turned out great. So we will add that for our next trip. A lot cheaper that the instant pudding from the freeze dried companies.

Any other dessert ideas?

Try the Nido brand Instant WHOLE milk for a real treat.

I also use instant pudding up there, and the whole milk gives it a REALLY rich, creamy texture.

Yes, I used this in the past on trips. It works well.

Ditto. The dry milk works fine for instant pudding - no refigeration needed.

You might want to try Jello Instant Cheesecake. It's the same kind of thing. No refigeration needed. Use powdered (dry Carnation) milk. I have followed direction using melted butter to make the crust, but what works better in the field is to sprinkle the graham cracker crust mix on top of the cheesecake custard. Use fresh raspberries or blueberries if available.

Another favorite of mine is Rice Pudding. Here's my recipe:

Rice Pudding

1 cup Minute Rice
1/2 cup raisins
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup Instant Milk
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon Lemonade Ade Powder

At Home: Bag all ingredients together. In Camp: Add mixture to 2 cups boiling water. Stir. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes. 4 servings.

Leftover instant oatmeal packets, add water + dehydrated milk then pan fry for an almost oatmeal cookie treat! I've added trail mix bits too!

I used dry milk for pudding last summer. It set up fine, but the dry milk gave it such a horrible taste....barf-o-rama. No thanks. I'll just take a good chocolate bar and have that for dessert.

Thanks for sharing, I guess I'll have to try it out.

Sounds easy, but how long did it take to setup?

Where are we getting "dried milk"? Can this be picked up at a local CUB Foods?

You can get Carnation dry milk at any grocery store, and my local stores (Meijer, Kroger, Walmart) also carry the Nido, which is whole milk and tastes a lot better, in my opinion. In one of those stores, I don't remember which, Nido was in with the ethnic foods (Spanish). I don't make pudding, but I take dry milk along for putting on cereal (oatmeal or granola).

I've used dry milk before but I like it cold. I think it improves the taste. I will mix it up and sink it deep overnight. This only works if your base camping though.

It only took about 10 minutes to set up.
