You can eat berries but would it be legal (for example) to eat the tubers of an arrowleaf (wapato), I think this could be harvested without significantly harming the plant.

I researched this topic briefly before my last trip. I believe that it is technically not legal. But, then again, who is going to get upset about a few missing tubers?

On the other hand, what if we all start foraging? The land would soon be barren. In my book, "leave no trace" is still the best practice.

If you are going to forage check out United Plant Savers they have guidelines to follow for sustainable harvesting. They are an organization that would be good to know anyhow.

It used to be. My father-in-law went in as a Scout many many years ago. They brought cast iron skillets, oil, sacks of potatoes and 20 lbs. of flour.

Everything other than the potatoes they ate was gained by foraging. I'm surprised they made it home ...

Amock -- It used to be "legal" back in the 1960's. I well remember a two week "survival" trip we did as scouts. Had one expert and about eight boys. We ate fairly well ... considering.

However, no matter how starved I am for protein, I have since refused to eat a single black spider.
