I found the info on this site very helpful planning my first trip since 2000. I would now like to plan a trip for myself and 6 year old son. I am looking for info on a nice easy trip for his first one. Would like to say primary concern is fishing, but more concerned about son having fun. Nice lake with some good spots to fish from shore and relatively good walleye. Would like to stay away from lots of casting. Any suggestions on a lake with no more than 4 portages, decent fishing, would like to stay away from caribou - Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Here are a couple of the daddy/daughter trips I've done. I like small water with a little one in the bow.
Baker #39 to Jack lake last year w/ my oldler then 9yo daughter. Saw 5 moose the first day and the best day of walleye fishing I've ever had in the bwca. Skinny lakes so wind didn't cause any problems.
Sawbill #38 to Smoke last week with my younger 7 yo daughter. We caught some walleye. We didn't get to the next lake (Burnt) which I've heard good things about.
I've also done Lizz to Caribou w/ older daughter at 7yo which you said is out (assuming because you were just there). Also did #50 Cross Bay w/younger daughter at age 5 and didn't have much luck fishing. I went back to it a year later on a daytrip w/ wife and caught some walleye.
There is a private tripping with kids forum you can join that has lots of good info in it.
I just did the Lizz to Horseshoe with my 9yo dtr, had a blast, saw moose and caught a couple of fish. Portages were fine, but I noticed you want to stay away from Caribou....We are planning our next trip to Tuscarora, long portages but nice campsites and good fishing. No matter where you go the time with your son will be unforgettable. Have a safe trip!!
