My uncle and I are taking our sons (ages 7 and 12) in on Little Gabbro Aug 4-9. Our plan is to base camp on Gabbro and day trip from there as I'm the only on that has been to the BWCA. Any suggestions on places we might want to see? Sounds like there might be a nice beach area on Bald Eagle. We'll plan to do plenty of fishing, but like to get out sightseeing as well if there is something worthwhile to check out. Thanks in advance!!

You could travel up to Turtle Lake to see fire damage. The rapids between Bald Eagle and Gabbro are a nice spot to relax. You could also trip into the Kawishiwi River.

I second gshepard. I'd try to get to Clearwater if you go to Turtle, though I found the awesomeness of Pietro and Camdre even more impressive. We did the whole loop (Gull-Peitro-Camdre-Clearwater-Turtle) as a day trip. It would be a long day but you probably could do it - or decide not to if your not on Clearwater for lunch by noon.

One easy portage and you have a lot of the Kawishiwi river to explore. Just the overlooks at the dams are kind of fun.

PS - I obviously meant to say I seconded landofthesky.....sorry.

Let me know how it is. I'm headed to that area over Labor Day.

Not far east of the big island on Gabbro is a beach on the south side. There is a friggin ton of blowdown in there, might not be in great shape now but if you need firewood it's there. The very south end of bald Eagle has a beach, too. Actually there's 2 more spots but there will almost certainly be campers there. The camp at the south end isn't very popular, lots of bugs, so there probably won't be anybody down there.
