Dear Bogwalker,

Thank you the reply. We have never traveled in the Eastern boundary, we picked out Meeds Lake- there were openings earlier this week for our travel dates August 10/15. Do you have any suggestions for this area? My grown sons and wives and I want to enjoy a few days of peaceful solitude. Meeds looked somewhat out of the way. Your ideas will be very much appreciated.

Thanks from SE Minnesota

As I mentioned I have been in only parts of this area, but I have thought about a loop starting at Meeds which I think is doable.

Starting at Meeds head for Caribou and down to Horseshoe. The Horseshoe area is almost a guarantee for seeing Moose. See if the campsite that is just south of where the lake turns west for the second time.

After a night or two on Horseshoe head east through Gaskin and either down to Winchell or if you want to relax stay on Gaskin or Pillsbery. From there work your way back to Meeds either through Pillsbery or go further east into Henson etc.

Again-I have no personal knowledge outside of Horseshoe and Gaskin, but I love the area and hope to do a trip west of Gaskin sometime soon.

Enjoy the journey.

Hey Bog!

I share your dream! I just got back from a trip to the Arrowhead region and, of course, had a great time. Now I'm looking at my next trip (as soon as possible). Sadly I'll be going back to school, and don't know how long I'll have to wait.

The one I'm looking at now starts at Lizz Lake ep# 47 and makes it's way down throught horseshoe, gaskin, to winchell, cliff to the cone lakes, brule over to the temperance lakes, cherokee (I hear is awesome), then back through long island, kiskadinna, and meeds. I'm really excited. I want to loop the route in five or six days.

I've never base camped before but I think a layover on Cherokee Lake would be a fun experiment.

I'm just passing through horseshoe and gaskin, but tell me what you know. Horseshoe=amazing moose sightings right? I don't know much about gaskin at all. I've been looking around buy no one has much to say about it. Pretty? Good fishing?

Dream on man!! It's all we can do right? When we're not up there I love to just sit and think about the next one.

Horseshoe is a cool lake with some nice campsites. We saw lots of Moose, both big males and Cows with yearlings last October. The lake has lots of fingers/bays so even when it has people you still feel like you are alone. We came up from Morgan through Vista which is a much tougher entry than from the north, but it is quieter. The portages themselves are not too bad, but the landings are tricky and the EP from Morgan is long (300+ rods).

Gaskin is another beautiful lake with some hills surrounding it and nice vistas. Can be dnagerous with a west wind that builds up across the lake. We did not see the entire lake staying mainly at the east end. We passed through on a day trip headed back toward Horseshoe after coming down from Allan.

You will love the area, but then again I have yet to go to an area in the BW that I did not enjoy.
