I am considering a spur-ish of the moment trip up to the BRT in the coming weeks. Wondering how hard it would be to follow the trail in current conditions? I looked at weather and snow conditions, looks relatively nice, not a lot of snow on the ground, I've got the equipment and the time, I'm just wondering if I need to borrow a gps to stay on course mostly.

Any other experience, advice or help would be appreciated.

Although the snow pack is well below normal, the BRT currently has a foot or more of snow on it, so you will be post-holing, so plan accordingly. I can't imagine that it would be hard to follow the route though.

Just got back from a trip a couple weeks ago. We hiked part of the BRT from Clearwater up to Gogebic lake. Like Arctic said there was about 12-16 inches of snow in the woods. (though it was powdery at that time)The section we were on was easy to follow as there were (we presumed) either wolf or bobcat tracks showing the way. But even beyond that, common sense pretty much indicated where the trail was. But, a gps is a nice security blanket.
