Heading to Lake Insula 6-12 via EP 30. Planning to base camp on northern end of lake and wondering what campsites to choose from other than the traditional favorites. We will be a group of 8 but need only 2 large tent sites. Any fishing advice would also be greatly appreciated.

Eyes-- 10-15' during the day--- less than 10' low light. Jigs, jigs and jigs in pinches and neckdowns.. Tip with a bit of plastic and leech and hang on!!!! Slip bobbers from shore at night from campsite. First campsite as you come from the south to north into the big bay that has Williamson island in it-- 1st campsite on the right doable. Not a 5* ,, but likely a 3.5,, sandy with spots for 2 big tents. If the water is high, your real estate will be tight. About 1 to 1.25 miles to the south of here there is a campsite that sits on a small, narrow peninsula and mainly faces to the east with a large rock out about 200 yards to the east. more real estate,,, no sand,, but trail to the thunderbox is likely wet. needed rubber duckies last time there.

macbones-
leave your e-mail,, and I can hook you better with both sites and fishing holes. My B-DUB trip is over for this year,, (headed for the family trip to Flour in 2 weeks),,, so it helps me to help others in dealing with withdrawals.

Insula-Really
Thinking of a possible trip to Insula with a friend and we both have two boys 6 & 4. Is this too much of a trip for first timers? (The Boys) Like it because it looks like a very fascinating lake.

6 years old and a trooper,, I would say yes. 4 year old--- questionalble. I have a 5 year old boy,, getting very close to maybe a Lake 2 or Lake 3,,, but not quite Insula.

I would stay here again in a heartbeat. I don't know the number but it's up in the northeast corner. Enjoy!

Thanks solotrek! Looks great. I also agree that Insula might be a stretch for such young lads. Lakes 2 and 3 offer nice camping and fishing and the experience of 2 easy portages. Whatever your decision, great paddling!

My very first trip to the BWCA I took both of my boys with, then 5 and 7. We went all the way to Insula and the boys loved it. It can be a long boring day of paddling for them so I wouldn't do it all in one day. They had a great time exploring the area on the portages.

We never made it to the north end of Insula but found a lot of campsites to be very nice with plenty of room.

I was just to Insula and back a week ago.

The water levels are up so much there's an "extra" bit of rapids between Lake Four and Hudson. The 25 rod portage nearest Hudson ends up about a being about a 35 rod portage if you walk past all the fast water. I'm sure the "alternate" portage is well traveled after this week.

We watched a couple of canoe's put in at the normal portage ending and run upstream through the fast water. I wouldn't recommend it if your a casual paddler.

There are so many threads on Insula. Just do a search and you'll get so much information.

It's a beautiful lake, great fishing, great campsites and camping at the north end of the lake sets you up well for day trips to other lakes - Alice, Fishdance, Kiana - and the Kawishiwi River too. Drift off the islands and points, channels, submerged islands and dropoffs for walleye. Fish walleye in the narrows at the north end of the lake. Bottom bounce with leeches. I use a lindy rig or just a split shot and hook w/leech.
