Anyone ever been up and around united states point? Basswoods lake looks to be fairly large, does it get choppy? any pointers?

I've been up there many times but not for several years. It's a large lake and it can get rough, but those islands are great fishing years ago a fishing buddy of mine caught a 31.5 in walleye up there it was a hog. there's quite a few decent campsites up there too.

I'm a hack - an amateur canoeist - and I love the paddle from PP to Basswodd Falls and Ranger Bay - both past US point. Looks like the sites to either side are nice - we ate lunch on the point two years ago and it was nice. You might want to acknowledge that on a really bad weather day you could end up stopping shorter of US point but other than that, I would not hesitate.

(Did this my second trip in 2002 - another dad and our 11 year old sons - great trip - first night on Ranger Bay.)

Been through that area the past 3 years going in or coming out of Quetico. If the wind is up from the west, the U.S. side between Washington Island and U.S. point is not bad, but heading west from the point to Basswood Falls can get dicey, even more so for inexperienced paddlers. Also, if the wind is howling from the north or south, paddling into these winds between U.S. point and Washington Island can be a pain. Hug the shorelines.

I've been wind bound on U.S. point a couple of times and it can be brutal. That being said, it's a great area with great fishing. Those big water areas just have a totally different feel to them. Go for it, but give yourself an extra travel day and be cautious.

Went around U.S. Point once,it was very calm on the west side and very windy on the east side like night and day! but doable as we hugged the shore heading south and got a break from the wind once we reached the islands. tom
