I am planning a trip for entry point 4/cummings lake for the first part of June. Any helpful info would be appreciated including; preferred camp sites, fishing locations/tips, best day trips available, and anything else that would be of note.

Been there four times and loved the trip. That mile portage to get into crab is flat but long, travel light. Cummings is the best smallmouth lake in the area. The bay to the left, as you get off the portage from Korb lake, was full of them. Can't say much about the campsites as I only stayed on one, #294 on a point heading north into the lake. It was very nice and breezy with plenty of room for two or three tents. I Fished the shorelines with mepps spinners and had a blast. June should be a great time for some good smallmouth action. thanks G.O.doors i did mean cummings not crab lake.

Unless I misunderstood your post, you will confuse someone when you say the bay to the left when you get off the portage from Korb was full of smallies, just after saying Crab was the best Smallmouth lake.
To eliminate any question, the bay to the left after the Korb portage that was full of smallies, will be on Cummings Lake.

I disagree on the mile portage being flat. While not a scramble, it seemed the first 1/4 mile was up, 2nd 1/4 was down, look for moose as you cross the swampy area, 1/4 up and then 1/4 down.

Also - depending on your stamina, you may consider a tow across Burntside. On our last trip the paddle in was placid and beautiful. The paddle out was directly into whitecaps and a steady 20 mph wind. The wind can make that a tough paddle across a big lake.

I agree on the good smallmouth fishing, and the island campsite is nice.

The portage to Crab had to be re-routed a few years agos, which made it a little longer and there's a short but moderately steep hill at the beginning now as northallen noted. After that the trail is mostly flat and smooth with a gradual ascent at the far end, but remember - I'm from WV :). We took the tow across Burntside and am glad we did. The cost was very reasonable.

Hey guys all the info has been great. As far as the tow across burntside; I am looking for a challenge and I have actually done this trip once before. I would like some info about a few day trips if possible. Anyone who has gone to Neewin to fish for pike, the long portage to Buck for Walleye, or back to korb for largemouth/pike. Which would be a better day trip as far as good fishing vs. difficulty paddling/portaging? Also if anyone has some specifics on targeting bigger pike on Cummings lake. I am an experienced largemouth bass fisherman, so specifics would be great! Also, if anyone has camped on the West side of the lake I would like to know about those campsites (especially the peninsula one facing West).

The site on the west side of Cummings facing west is very very nice. We stayed there last July. Check out my trip report for more.

I also recommend exiting via Crab Creek, assuming water levels are decent (water should be plenty high in early June, especially after all the snow this winter). It's a nice adventure and alternative to the portage, provides variety to do the portage one way, and the creek the other. Assuming you are only going to do the creek one way, I'd go with taking it out instead of in, since then you are going downstream.

I haven't done it, but one day trip I'd like to try is exploring a few miles down the upper reaches of the Little Indian Sioux. It looks like it would be as much portaging as paddling. Might be fun.

Sorry I can't help with the fishing.

Any other fishing insights guys? Even general smallmouth and pike tips would be great. I am a largemouth guy, so my plan was to use scaled down versions of most of my lm lures.

See if you can contact keithcatfish from the forum.
I haven't seen any posts from him lately, but he caught quite a few largemouth bass on Korb Creek a few years ago.

I have been to Cummings once. We stayed at the campsite on the southern island on the east bay. It was one of the better campsites I've stayed on in the BW. It was early August after a nasty heat wave, but the fishing was OK. We fished a lot around the narrows between the east bay and the large central part of the lake.
I would use a lot of spinner baits, tube baits, or suspending cranks. I caught several sm bass 3-4 lbs and even a 10 lb norten just trolling a spinnerbait near the bottom in 15ft at sunset. There are some good sized sunnies in the lake for a bonus and they are dark colored. Good luck.

Hey TGO!

I've been busier than a 1 legged man in a butt kicking contest. My guiding business for striped bass here in TN has monopolized most of my free time. Sadly, I will probably not make my annual BW trip this year. If I do make it to the cool north woods, I'll be there in early July for an EP 4, LLC or Crooked Lake trip. You can be sure I'll stop in for my pound of leeches and fishing banter.

Keith
