Got a 9-10 day late September trip. Plan on camping on Vista & Winchell for a few days each. I've already done my usual research.

Looking for any additional information the members of this site care to share. Campsites, hiking, fishing, daytrips, trees, rocks, cool spots, literally just anything any of you find of interest in this area.

Thanks to everyone in advance.
Paul

Especially in September, the waves can be trecherous on Winchell. I'd plan my route so that I was traveling in a counter clockwise (westerly) direction on Winchell.

I just spent a few days on Vista the camp high on the east shore.
Took a day trip to Morgan.

Then went to Winchell for a day and came back thru Omega, Henson, Pilsbury & Allen. Nice trip.

Fishing is better on the south arm of Horsehoe than on the north arm

Just as I got into Horseshoe I looked up and saw an eagle. Above it and diving upon it was an osprey. Well, the osprey was getting the better of the eagle, so the eagle went and hid in the woods for awhile. When the osprey left the eagle flew off.
Just then CA-RUNCH my canoe ran into a rock. I'd been watching the bird fight and not paying attention. No harm as I was only drifting though.
There is an osprey nest on the Vista side of the portage from Horseshoe. You can't see it well from land but just after you push off look back. It's just to the right of the portage.

Went in through Lizz last year the last week of August and basecamped on Gaskin at a great, open, and big site. We did not go over to Vista. We did an awesome 14 mile daytrip from Gaskin to Winchell, Omega, Henson, Pillsbury, Allen, Jump and back to Gaskin. From Omega to Jump we only saw 2 other canoes. We really enjoyed the small, skinny lakes in the area. It is a good area for seeing moose.

The add photo link isn't working right now so I'll try to add a couple later.

Take the trail to the top of the cliff on Winchell...great view.

Where exactly does the trail start? What part of the lake?

I'd like to know where the trail starts too. We will be base camping on Gaskin and plan a day trip to Winchell. It would be pretty cool to hike up there with my wife and daughter. For those that have done it, how would you rate it? Is it doable for a 7 year old girl?
