I started backpacking last year and have only done a few trips. Mostly weekends at state parks. Lake Maria, Wild River, Afton, etc...
Planning on a long weekend on superior Hiking Trial this summer. There are also other trails, North Country, Ice age trail, Pow Wow, Isle royal, and others.
Take a look at the "Private group forum: On Foot" here or look at Backpacker.com forums Midwest section for idea's.
I do a little bit of backpacking mostly in the parks as mentioned Afton, Lake Maria and Wild River.
I did a solo trip on Isle Royale a number of years back. I can tell you that it is a great experience to hike the island. I hiked the Greenstone trail which runs the spine of the island. Great hike with some nice vistas and you get to stay at the island lakes for swimming and water resupply.
Hiked Angle worm lake in the B-dub and can recommend that as a weekend hike. Nice hike in and great vistas of Angleworm.
I tried a short couple hikes on the Superior Hiking trail near state parks and that can be very enjoyable as well. Best thing to do is get out there and explore.
Good luck.
