Hey all,

My buddy and I were caught last year in some pretty nasty weather and in discussing our trip plans this year we decided to pick up a weather/emergency radio to take with us. I started to look into this and the amount of products out there made my head spin not to mention that when you look at reviews there are so many its hard to know what to trust and what works best for the BWCA, Quetico, and Woodland Caribou areas. So, I have gotten some amazing feedback on this messageboard and really appreciate all the people that make this place happen and those that contribute their wisdom. I am wondering what you all use and how well they work. Thanks in advance for your time!

My current radio of choice for all camping occasions is the C Crane CC
WX Pocket Radio, available from REI for $60. It is AM/FM with 7 weather channels, alarm clock function, ear buds, etc. It weighs 3.8 ounces, is the size of a pack of cigarettes. The big thing I like about it is the reception--comes with a 2 foot long wire string-type antenna that gets great reception. Other radios I've taken to the BW off the Gunflint have done poorly on reception--this one is great. Comes with a belt clip and you can walk around with the antenna run through your belt loops and be entertained without being inconvenienced. One of my best buys. Uses 2AA batteries that last quite a long time.

How do you think the reception would be in Quetico?

quote Canoe42: "How do you think the reception would be in Quetico?"

I wish I could speak to Quetico reception, but I have never been there. I think the sensitivity should be universal--I also get better reception around home than I do with any other small radio. I am sure there are lots of experiences by others as to reception-possible in the Q., so I'll have to wait and learn too.

as long as you are near Atikokan you ought to be able to pick up Environment Canada's repeater

No luck in WCPP. Red Lake does not have station.

I bring a CCrane pocket radio. I find it picks up the Ely and Grand Marais weather stations. It also picks up WELY radio station.
