I found this tarp in the sportsmans guide. However, it doesn't list the weight.

I was wondering if any of you have one or have seen them. They look fairly comparable to the much more expensive brands, which is great as long as the quality is there too. Any advice on this particular tarp? Thanks for your replies.

I own one. It's lightweight, compact, and does the job. However, it's not really big - perfect for one or two. OK for three. Four ... I dunno, I think someone gets wet.

If you have a small group - get it. It's a good buy.

It is a great tarp. I have two of them. For the price you really cannot beat them. I was really surprised by the good quality for the price. It withstood some extremely windy conditions on a trip in late September last year.

ok..now i have a question! hahah

is it a square design or a parawing style?

05/22/2008 04:48PM
Just received one I ordered earlier this month. Haven't spread it out fully yet, will do this weekend so I can seal the middle seam.

It appears square, although I'm sure Bannock or fireupthespam can answer for sure. The sack they include is pretty big, seems like they could have put in a bag a little fatter and half the height.

I got one, took it last year and held up fine. Kanoes- square!

the tie-out loops look to be webbing and reinforced back into the tarp. true?

05/22/2008 05:41PM
I bought one recently, on Bannock's advice. It is a few feet from me as I am in the process of packing. I just set it on an old postal scale a moment ago and it reads just under a pound and three-quarters, including the bag and cord it comes with.

Yep - I bought one. And a Kelty also which was more expensive. I am taking both next week. But I won't be back until June 10th. I'll let you know then how it worked. Izzy

We leave on June 7 for our June 8 entry. Sounds like I'll be ordering one of these. Thanks to everyone for your replies. Always in question of the quality when the price is so much cheaper. Sounds like a good buy though. Thanks again!

Order soon. I ordered mine early May and it was backordered for a week and a half. It didn't say so when I placed the order but when I got the confirmation it said that item would be delayed.

Jan - yeah, its webbing and reinforced back into the tarp material. there are also brass grommets in the webbing.

05/22/2008 10:18PM
grommets? i dont do those! hahah

If it's 12x12 and white with 17 tie-out points, I bought one a couple months ago. I figured if it only lasts an outing or two it was worth it as the cheaper, nearly disposable blue poly tarps are $10 -$15 and outweigh it considerably. Glad I read this thread as it reminded me to seam-seal it before using just as PM. I kinda hope it doesn't get put to the test too badly next month (wind & rain), because I'm thinking it will be the only fly we take. I have a 16x20 rope hemmed polytarp that still sheds water, but a grommet is loose and it weighs 5-6 lbs. ;) oth

Well I placed my order and am now the proud owner of a guide gear tarp. I hope its not on backorder as Mirth warned or it may not be here for our trip~:0 Bannock, this may be a stupid question as we haven't used a tarp before.....but at 12'by12' it seems it should cover more than 2 or possibly 3. I guess I'll learn that lesson soon enough, as there are four of us....haha. Thanks again to everyone for your helpful replies!

Welcome to the club =)

When you get your order confirmation email it *should* have an estimated ship date in there. Usually takes 24 hours or so before you can look up your order on SG's website.

It is a parawing style. That is why it does not have as much coverage as you'd expect. The best way to rig it is the way that Sportsman's Guide shows -- a peak in the front and almost to the ground in the back. It creates sort of wing side walls. It doesn't hang "flat" well.

I ordered mines years ago, so maybe it is a slightly different model, but mine has the small webbing tie points and only a couple of them (the two-end ones I think) have the gromment in them. The grommet is on the tab not the tarp.

But it is very light and very nice for a solo tarp.

I ordered my Tarp on E-Bay with Sportsman Guide being the seller. I noticed that someone mentioned the tarp might be on back order. I thought if you placed a item for sale on E-Bay you had to have that item in your possession. I placed my order a week ago and I still waiting. I leaving for my BWCA in two weeks. If it doesn't come in time I guess I'm going to be forced to purchase a higher priced tarp in Ely.

My tarp has arrived! Just an update if any of you were looking to buy. It is actually square, not a parawing style so I am happy we will all fit under it. Also, probably not on backorder anymore as I got mine relatively quickly. Thanks again for everyones help with this.

"It is actually square, not a parawing style ..."

I'm surprised. They must have a different model than the one I bought. I'm certain the one pictured is not square.

Have you hung it yet?

Okay, I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to tarps. I was planning on using a regular tarp from Home Depot. Is there something about them that I am missing? I know it isn't the best thing out there but it'll work for camping for 5 days right?

Is it just a lot heavier?

Sure will, it'll work fine.
It's just that after awhile, the light weight and aesthetic appeal will make you want to buy one of the Kelty or Campmor or SG or CCS nylon "nicer" tarps. But what you plan will work great, nothing wrong with it, and it's economical.

05/28/2008 11:18AM
Yeah, what Howard said. Two other things: 1) they get noisy in a wind, and 2) if the wind really picks up, they can shred. Still, they will work. You just have to replace them often. But for a one-time, 5 night trip, no problem.

I haven't hung it yet, waiting for the trip for that. I did lay it out on the living room floor and it lays out perfectly flat. It does have certain tie points in different areas on the tarp to make it parawing style, but it also has tie points around the edges so you can use it flat. I will take pictures and share when we get back.

I have a SG tarp and it will lay flat, but it's not square. So i consider it a "parawing" style. GuideGearTarp

Back from the trip and the tarp worked like a charm. It does tie out flat and had enough room to keep the 6 of us dry and comfortable. with the extra tie points I think you could hang this tarp 100 different ways. Well spent $20!
