looking to rent some portage wheels in ely, anyone know what outfitter has them for rent?

Where do you plan to use them? They are prohibited in the BWCA, but I am sure you know that.

The outfitters on Fall should have them - since they are legal on Fall.

Before you rent, ask two questions:
1. As mentioned, are you going one of the few places they're allowed?
2. Ask the outfitter how big they are. We rented wheels for the Four Mile Portage (I forget the outfitter) & I swear they were F-150 tires. We couldn't even get the monstrosity flat in the canoe; it was sticking up a good two feet over the gunwhales. We ended up leaving it in the car, since I was with a novice paddler, & didn't want a huge piece of gear throwing off our balance.

Considering using them on the 4 mile portage from fall lake into Ella hall
