Seen these in Backpacker magazine and thought I would pass it on. This was an editors choice and that usually gets my attention. I will get a kit for sure.

BTW......Backpacker mag translates very nicely for canoe gear and I generally find their gear reviews fairly good. (And at $20 per year sort of a deal).

The only caveat I would add is the matches need their striker to ignite and it the striker gets wet it needs to be dried before use. 2 spare strikers are included in the kit however............just something to consider.

I just use strike anywhere matches. Tie 3 or 4 together and dip into some melted candle wax. Those will light and burn when wet and last around 5-7 minutes.

I have these and really like them. You can light them, put them underwater, put them back out and they are still burning. Each match burns for about 10 seconds, plenty of time to light a fire. One thing about these that you said is to keep the striker dry. This is not a problem because they give you 2 strikers. One for the outside and a spare. I put both on the inside of the waterproof housing to be safe.

Same Company $2 cheaper with more than twice the capacity, I have 4 sets at last count. Add regular strike anywhere for primary use.

The striker looks to be upgraded on the more expensive version. Better or necessary? Who is to say. The cheaper version looks to be some sandpaper......good luck getting that dry if it gets wet.

Same kind of striker, you need to keep it tucked away inside the case when not needed. It is like sandpaper. You just slide it into place. It says that they give you 3 strikers for 10 matches.

Good find MT and B-head. I may get one of each.

I really like the Stormproof Match case because it is long enough to hold a good supply of strike anywhere matches (about 3 dozen), which tend to be too long for the plastic Coghlans Match Case and many others.

OK......I will take your word for it. In the pic there is a slot where the striker is encapsulated on the exterior and one looks to be different than the other.

Butthead mentions capacity as being twice as large in his link........If I was tripping in winter or deep into the shoulder seasons I would like having the bigger capacity........more matches better. But if I were in warmer temps I would go for the smaller more compact version as I would like to carry the kit on my person.

3 different sizes of Storm Matches. SurvivalStormProof, 15 wood box standard length, up to 12 second burn. StormProof, 25 (room for 40), wood kitchen match length, 15 second burn. TitanStormProof, 12 ex-large (4 inch), 25 second burn.
Take yer pick.
