I have a question, maybe a stupid one but I'm going to ask it here because I know someone can answer it.

Can I use an 8x10 nylon footprint as a tarp for shelter from the rain? It doesn't have as many grommets but I don't get too creative with those anyway. It's waterproof, right? And lightweight. And it's less expensive on clearance than a regular lightweight nylon tarp.

So....I hope the answer is, "Why not?" ....because I just ordered one. I can return it or find other uses for it if not but I'm hoping it will work.

Thanks!

i have used footprints as tarps for years. you can get them really cheap at the scratch and dent at rei. grommets are easy to attach. these can also be purchased at rei.

Sure. But instead of grommets I would sew on some webbing loops to it where you want them for additional tie outs. I have done this with a couple of other generic tarps

+ one on sewn in webbing loops where you want them. Practice hang, fool around with some configurations, you will see where loops would help. Mark the spot with a sharpie. Find webbing material, and if you do not want to/do not have sewing capability, go to a shoe repair place, they will likely do it for you, small charge, good outcome, as they have heavy duty machines.

There clearly are better options for a tarp, but if it works for you, it works for you.

Footprints will work. Just not as strong (think wind loading and tension), nor as versatile.

Was it the intention that a footprint be used as a tarp?
NO

Can it be used as a tarp?
YES

Will you be satisfied using a footprint instead of a tarp?
That remains to be seen, and only you can answer that question.
Sometime when a piece of equipment is used for a task for which it was not intended, there are natural consequences. Some natural consequences are positive; some are not.

A couple of days spent under a footprint, with heavy rain and strong wind will probably give you your answer.

^^^ He's right, you know. ^^^

Ultimately, you'd be better off getting yourself a cheap Menards or Fleet Farm plastic tarp.

I've been using a 10x12 footprint as a tarp shelter for the last 8 years. It was found in Cabelas bargain cave and it was cheap. It's been through a lot and still doesn't leak. I'm sure there are different qualities of footprints, but this one has been perfect.

I guess I wasn't logged in when I made that last post. Oops.
