What do you guys have for a group Tarp?
This last trip I took was a real bummer not having a group tarp to be able to hang out under. I am considering getting something for the next trip. I was looking at the CCS tarps, 10x16. I am not sure if that is overkill or not, we typically have 3 guys that go, sometimes 2, and up to 7. lol, so I would like to have all the bases covered.

For groups of 4 or more I usually bring two 10x12 CCS 1.1 ounce tarps. Having two gives me the flexibility to have a windbreak as well as a larger tarp if needed. Sometimes finding space for a 10x16 is a challenge that's why I go the two tarp route for the flexibility. It is nice to have if there is a cold wind driven rain while you are in camp or to have a large canopy if you just need shade or something to sit under if its a light rain.
Granted finding room for 7 or more under a 10x12 is a challenge but we always made it work.

I have a 10x10 but I like the idea that some have suggested that a 10x14 or 16 can be hung like a 10x10 with a windbreak or as a larger roof depending on the situation. Of course, two tarps is even more flexible.
10x10 is good for 4, tight with 6 people. But if it is raining then we can be friendly.

I concur. 10x10 good up to 4. Go bigger for a larger group or bring 2. My group tarp is 12 x 12 Gear Guide that I got several years ago. Its heavy, but solid and waterproof.

Same here. 1.1 really saves on weight and bulk.

Well depending on group size - I use and love tarps.
Kelty 16 x 16 for big group - hard to find space
Kelty 12 x 12 use a lot - over a kitchen area or center of camp for base camp
CCS - 10 x 12 - light weight and good quality.
Granite Gear 10 x 14 - My favorite -

I have a CCS that I bought used and love it. It is 12x14 but I would like it 12x16 even for four. I would like the windward side to be able to angle down farther. Closer to the ground. We had a pretty intense storm the last trip a rain was driving in under the windward side even though it was down half way to the ground.

I use the 16' x 16' Kelty for our group tarp, no matter how many people we have along. The bigger the better when it rains and with the numerous tie out loops, the possibilities for hanging are endless.
I also bring several 12' x 12' Sportsman Guide tarps. They come in handy as ground tarps under tents, covering the wood pile, wind breaks around the 16' x 16' and hanging over tents / hammocks for extra protection from the rain and increased gear storage.
Tarps are versatile, lightweight and take up little room in the pack. No such thing as too many.

I use a 12x12 rip-stock tarp that was made for the floor of a large tent. I found it in the bargain cave at Cabelas ten years ago for just a few dollars. It's very lightweight and strong. As good or better than any other canopy tarp I've ever used. It was a great find.

That is a great find, but might take some time to find another deal like that.

With tarps, lighter is better. Since they are most useful when it is raining, dark and dreary, the extra light from an off-white tarp is welcome. Dark tarps just make things darker. Learned from experience.

I have a new CCS 15' x 15' tarp I have not used yet. Taking it on its first outing with a group of 9 tomorrow. I have concerns it will be too big but I am going to a campsite where I know it will fit. I just hope the site is open when we get there. Can let you know what I think when I get back.

I have a kondos 10x10 tarp. For the most part gives us plenty of space, but there are times if it rains for long periods of time that a larger tarp would be nice. But to be honest in 25 years of canoe tripping, I can only think of a handful of days that I wished I had a bigger tarp.

We have a long standing rule for our group of 5-9 who've been going in for the past 20yrs.... "Everyone brings in a tarp...." Nothing fancy.. just some std tarps... Not all get used, but in rainy trips they come in very handy! Covering up the cut wood pile, using as ground cloth when cleaning dishes, rain proof/ wind proof shelter, etc....

In my opinion, one large tarp is better than trying to cobble together multiple small tarps to create a large, tarp covered area.
CCS are the go to tarp people in my opinion.
If weight is a concern; let everybody in your party take a turn at being responsible for carrying the tarp. Everyone should also be involved in setting up, and taking down a tarp that is used by everyone.
I've seen guys plead ignorance about setting up a tarp, but they are usually the first under the tarp when the s--- hits the fan. If you are tarp construction ignorant; you need to be assisting the person setting up the tarp, until you gain some expertise. I don't buy the "I don't know how" cop out. Same goes for cooking, cleaning, wood gathering, fire starting, etc. Everybody needs to be involved in camp "chores".

I've had guys in our camp give me grief when I say the cook doesn't clean too. They don't wanna clean up, then do the cooking ;) I'll gladly clean

Used my CCS 15' x 15' for the first time last week. Simply awesome. Had a great setup that fit our entire group of 9. Easily adjusted to block strong winds, keep us dry and still let us hang out around the fire. Probably the second best upgrade to camp this year simply because the gravity fed Sawyer water filter system was incredible. Didn't even have to think about clean water. There was always 5-10 gallons lying around.

We love our new CCS 12.5 x 14 rainbow tarp. Almost infinite ways to rig it with all the sewn loops. +1 on the bright colors to cheer up a rainy day! I found a creative solution to using a sharp stick as a center pole - covered it with my open handled coffee mug and slipped the center tarp loop through the handle to secure it to center.

May go to a green. My multi colored attracts bees and hummingbirds. And those bees include wasps.

I've got a CCS yellow tarp and have not noticed any large increase in insects or hummingbirds with it over my light gray tarp.
