I struggled so much getting fires going my last trip when everything was wet. I've been thinking about how to bring a small contained unit to boil water on. I don't like gas stoves, I always cook over wood. I had some scrap copper at work so I bent this up. I'm going to test it tomorrow, will see if it works.

Wood and twig burners work well and are fun to make, Zen Stoves Wood Burners has a lot of info. Just remember they can't be used in the BWCA during a fire ban.

Looks cool, just make sure you get good air flow thru it though, thats going to be a make or break. You want enough so that the fire will breathe, and burn hot, but not so much flow that it burns fast. Let us know how it works though!
Ya, we will just canoe in Lake Superior.

Tried it out today, had some damp frozen wood to work with, but no problems. Had coffee done in about 20 minutes. I think I will add a couple more holes on the top so more heat can go up. Seemed to draw great, but it was windy, have to see what happens on a calm day.

How about a pot spacer/stand instead so it can actually use the holes that are there...?
I'm just here to give my opinion...If you don't like it, ignore it.

I think that looks like an awesome stove! Is there anyway it could be built to collapse? I cook exclusively over the open fire, and in the BWCA the firepits are half the issue. If that could be used on top of the firegrate, it would make cooking much easier.
Also, you should be aware that even though it is in the form of a stove, BWCA rules require that it be used inside the fire grate. I know it sounds stupid, but I have had conversations with the FS about similar situations.
In fact what I had talked with them about was the use of a bendon 4in1 tote oven. I was using the coleman peak one stove on top of the fire grate, with a small twig fire on top of the "oven" to make a small pie. Was told in no uncertain terms that I needed to put the fire out as it was not "inside" the fire grate. I asked about using a wood stove in a wall tent for a fall duck hunting trip, he again re-iterated that wood fires are only allowed inside the fire grate and no where else! So, I would check with the FS about using them outside of the firegrate, and get it in writing if you get someone to say it is okay.

Very slick! What is it made of?"
I think this was made from either 22 gauge (.0299 inch thick) or 20 gauge (.0359 thick) sheet steel. I'm lucky we have a water-jet here at work to cut parts but it could have been done with hand tools.
