I wish someone would make them. War department crabs about the intensity of the light given off by the mantles with the clear glass globes....

I‘ve looked. I was not able to find any, so I used a glass etch kit. I got mine at a local craft store, but they are also online. It worked fine. I even made a fancy one with a loon, for my uncle.

Just go and buy an extra clear globe and frost it yourself or take it to a place that does sandblasting and see if they can frost it for you. I imagine the chemical frosting type stuff for DIY won't take the heat of the lantern. So I'd go the acid etching or sandblasting methods myself. Check with either a custom glass company or a cemetary monument business about the sandblasting.

I absolutely despise the light from those lanterns, so I sympathize with your camp mates.

No idea where my first post went?
Go to an auto repair place and ask if they have a glass bead blaster, most have them to clean carbon off the parts. See if they will blast a test piece for you, if you like it blast the globe.
