How many tarps do you take?
I've found that three seem to get the job done if you are going in a rainy month.

Any thoughts?

I usually take two but this year I'm going to take one. Time for one of the other guys to step up to the plate and buy one.

We tend to bring two, but I'm sure I would put a third one to good use if I brought it!...

one 8x10

For our groups (6-9 guys) we bring one 12x12 Guide Gear (one of the original, truly 12x12) and one 12x12 Kelty Noah tarp along, but it seems like we usually only see the need (or find the room) to set up one of them on our trips. Pretty lightweight, so we keep bringing both. We also bring a smaller cheap hardware store blue tarp - 6x8 - for covering firewood at night.

I own two but only carry one 12 X 12 when going solo (wish it was a 10 X 10).

04/29/2014 08:52PM
One for each hammock going and one for the kitchen or hang out if weather turns. Two Noah's 12x12 when I solo, add the CCS tundra if in a group.

04/29/2014 09:00PM
Last 2 trips I've done 4 person basecamps. I took 2 12x12 and 2 8x8. The small ones I use for gear storage or for dry access to the tents, or just whatever. That won't make sense for most trips but it works well for us.

Two-person trip = two tarps (1 - 10x10 & 1 - 10x16)
Four person trip = three tarps (add another 10x10)

Between zero and one, depending on the group and the trip.

Depends on the number of people going: for one 8x10 for two or more then either the 10x10 or the 12x12. better to have more room then not enough.

I bring one tarp 10' x 12' for two or three people.

04/30/2014 07:00AM
I bring two. One for the hammock and a 10'x14' CCS Tundra Tarp for shelter from rain and kitchen cover.

04/30/2014 07:10AM
I find that one (it's 10x14) is sufficient on my solo (or tandem) trips.

We normally go with 6-8 guys and basecamp a lot so we can spend our time fishing. We bring two tarps - one CCS 12' x 12.5' to sit under and one additional CCS tarp to act as a wind break.

Do you solo mostly, or travel as a twosome?
The reason I ask is that I am considering a 10X10 for two of us.

I bring a 10x14 to hang out in, and a 10x10 for my hammock that doubles as an add'l hang-out space if necessary.

Everyone in my group is a hammock camper so each of us bring a tarp for our hammocks and each carry a second tarp. Last year there were six tarps total, three not hanging over a hammock. I have the original 12x12 guide gear. My brother has the Noah 16, and dad brings an 8x12 no name. The guide gear and 8x12 get used most often. One year when it got really cold and windy e set up all three and made a three wall shelter around the fire. In really rainy years we have set up our hammocks close together and used that 16x16 as a porch area. When I solo I only bring my warbonnet superfly, there is no need to have an area to get together.

I think each person should carry a tarp, that way all your bases are covered. Hammockers will always have at least one, but it is nice to have that community area.

9 x 9 if it rains for over the Latrine or tent "porch" area.

Travel Trip - one 12x12

You all may roll your eyes when I ask the question because the answer may be obvious to all but me, however, when you are talking about tarps, are you referring to they kind of tarps you might find at a hardware store or are you referring to something that is designed especially for camping or are you referring to something more akin to a tent fly? Just curious to know what others are using to make their trips more enjoyable.

One. 10x12 silnylon tarp.

Have brought two on occasion, but never used the second.

Two. One is set up as a gear storage and firewood storage area. The second is set up as needed for us to get out of sun or rain.

The tarps that we bring are mostly coated nylon or silnylon designed for camping. We started off like most, bringing the big blue poly tarps. We only switched to save space and weight. Another thing to keep in mind, the kinds of tarps that have eyelets tend to tear out. A good camping tarp will have loops at the tie-out points.

What is that, $1400 - $1500 worth or tarp? All my stuff including my canoe didn't cost me that much combined.

04/30/2014 12:07PM
We bring two CCS tarps - one goes over the entrance to the tent, while the other goes in a place where we can easily sit and take shelter while it rains.

04/30/2014 12:18PM
I take two, a CCS 10 x 10 and a CCS 10 x 12.

04/30/2014 12:34PM
For two people I bring one CCS 12'x14' Tundra tarp. For four people I add another CCS 10'x10'.
Jimmy Justice, we are talking about tarps specifically made for camping, not the tarps you buy at Menards or Fleet Farm. A quality sil-nylon tarp is one of the best pieces of gear you can bring canoe camping, and there are many tarp threads on this site that are most educating. For more info on a premium quality tarp, check out the Tundra Tarp made by Cooke Custom Sewing here in Minnesota. Dan is a site sponsor and makes a fabulous product.

Correction to my earlier post because I don't want to be called a liar: My primary tarp is 10'x14', not 12'x14'. Whew, now I feel better....

Cool, thanks. That certainly helps with my decision.
We travel and never stay in the same camp more that two nights, but want that added protection on those days when it's less than ideal out.

I usually trip with one other person and we bring two 10x10's. So far this size has worked out well for us.

Funny. I have always used just one tarp regardless of a solo or a group of 5. In all my years I never even contemplated bringing a second tarp. My first trip to the Q this year is June 4 and there will be five of us. This post has me considering two tarps, especially if the forecast is marginal. I guess even an old dog can learn new tricks. Thanks

04/30/2014 09:17PM
Depends on the trip.

Solo its my 10x10 CCS and my Warbonnet Superfly. The 10x10 may not always get deployed, but sure is nice to have when its a pouring or if I get wind bound.

With a group its my 10x14 CCS, and 10x10 CCS, and if I'm hang'n the Superfly as well.

Lots of times the 10x10 is carried in my rucksack since the time that my son and I got wind bound while out fishing. We could see the camp, but had to hunker down for about four hours until we could get back on the water again on Oyster.

Sorry for the mistype, I meant 2 tarps. A single 15x15 CCS screen tarp and a single CCS 10x14 tarp. The cost of the 2 of them was under $500, it helps to know the place and time to buy things. Plus as a friend of mine says "it's only money and you'll make more".

For 6 guys.......

3 tarps.

1 small 4 x 4 to cover all wood......
1 14 x 16 CCS main tarp
1 12 x 12 CCS to use for wind, if necessary. If really rainy, we set this one up too.

Later,

Geo

Ha! I used that line on my wife just this morning! Then the trouble came from two fronts: (1) she was heading off to work and I was pouring my third cup of coffee, (2) she thinks we need to spend it all on the grandkids but not so much on my 'canoe goodies' as she calls them... sigh.
