Depends on what your time is worth and how available the cord and accessories are for you. If you want to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to save $5.00, that's up to you, but Old Scout makes a nice product and you'll use them for years and years. To me, I'm all about supporting the little guy. He's a member of this board and a good friend.

Well I am biased but I'd say no. I bought them from Old Scout before they were even sold publicly--I think we met in a dimly lit parking lot near the Winter Park facility. Back then they came with a story about Old Scout facing off with a bear trying to steal his food pack near the Malberg area... still love that story :)

How many do you guys have? I need to order some and can't decide how many to get. I want to lash the paddles, rods, etc and have some in camp too. I don't think I'll need any for garters. =)

I'm sure I have around 15-20 of them, but you probably don't need that many. On any given trip, I'll use 8 or 10.

I use 2 of them to hold spare paddles in and a couple others for various other things. So I get by with around 6-8 of them. I got them in bright colors so I could spot them easier if I dropped them.

I have at least 2 of each color he makes for around a quantity of 10 or so. For portaging I lash my spare paddle, my main paddle and a fishing rod and use 2 BDBs for each lashing. Hope that helps.

I take 6-8 on canoe trips. They are also handy to have on my bicycle. I used them to hold the front wheel steady when transporting my bike, and they are useful holding a light jacket on my bike. I also keep a couple in my car. They are very useful.

Yes, but I think you then lose some bwca.com cred - and you don't get to hang out with the cool kids.

I have a couple of BDB's that I have picked up when up in Ely. Of course down here in Southern Illinois you can't just run to your local canoe shop (hah,) and pick up a few when you are running low. What you can do, however, is stop in at the army surplus store after work. They have this kind of ball bungee

in all sorts of lengths for 36 cents a piece. Buy the 11" ones and then add adjustability by walking down the aisle and picking out some cord locks for 14 cents each.

Perfectly functional - but lacking the bear story coolness.

Well, I made my own. Made various lengths and color coded some. I'm sure they are inferior to Old Scout's but they work just fine for me. Not sure they would hold your leg together though.

On a spring solo a couple years ago, I realized at my first portage that I forgot my yoke at home. BDB's came to the rescue. I fashioned a yoke out of my paddle and my rod tube... it held up nicely and worked great.

I have 54, got no idea why. I guess if you're gonna use them for crap like pants garters maybe you need more than a sensible person....;-)

I recommend one more- so you could bungie your 54 together. Someone at a store that sold them (don't remember where) said, "If you can't find a use for these, you're not thinking"

Well Done. You can never have too many BDBs.

I think I have about 12. Pick up a couple every time I go to the Midwest Mtn store. Have a couple of Chotas as well but don't care for them as much. Too much fooling around to make them, and probably not much cheaper.

04/14/2014 09:17AM

BDBs....I think I have about 30. Yeah, there's other stuff out there, but I'd rather buy from a seasoned tripper. Thanks Old Scout.

I always replenish my supply of BDBs each season. But I use mine year round, not just for canoe camping. About a dozen each year does it.

This is a loaded question. Very easy to order, they come to your door and you're done...right?

Like most Boy Scout Troops, our funds are minimal. So in our case it was easier (in the practical sense) to get the parts and make our own. We made about 50 or so, may not be as good as BDB's but work just fine! We call them "DEATH GRIPS". Must be spelled with all caps!!!!

Oarlittle,
I started out with eight BDBs last year but found myself perilously close to running out, so I ordered another eight earlier today for this coming season. If I were you I would have 12-16 (ordered in fours online) with you when you trip.

Does Old Scout make the BDB's.. They are a mystery to me.

Kanoes got me ambling down the aisle at Menards when I found one I think in Ohio and I got a pack of 12 I think ( they are multiplying like clothes hangers I swear) of the ones that Drab illustrated.

But are the latter genuine BDB's?

HELP!

Kanoes, I could have sworn you were the one that said in a recent thread that you had picked up a nicely priced tube of assorted "twist ties" at Menards... I remember making a metal note to look for them the next time I was there.

I am thinking that is what YC might be referencing.

A minimum of 4 per canoe - 2 each to secure the paddle and fishing rod while portaging.
