Would thus work or be helpful on a grate?

I'm always a bit nervous about anything that's in an infomercial or named 'Miracle' but that does look very interesting.

It got fairly good reviews on Amazon were it is cheaper also. Biggest complaint is that it cannot be used with an open flame.

That might be the ticket on fire grates in the bw!? If you decide to try one be sure to do a gear review! Thanks for posting.

Thats a little confusing. I watched him cook on it over an open flame. Did they go into the issues like too high of a flame? What happens does it melt? I suppose I could read it myself haha.

My biggest worry is toxins in the material especially with that kind of heat hitting it. I'm sure its made in China, land of 1 trillion health hazards.

Some said it started melting with a flame. Most Bbq's have metal covers over the flame.

On his video you never see a flame while using the mat, but you do see a flame when he's not using it.

I'm guessing that we are occasionally not seeing real food on those mats, rather some rubber and plastic stuff. This is used all the time in food photography (i.e. bubbles in coffee done with a bit of dish soap, inedible oils sprayed on vegetables, etc). Take a look at the "grill marks" left on the 'pancake.' Use some stop action or slow motion during the flip and it's easy to see that they are not aligned with where the 'cake' sat on the grill's bars.

Most of my cooking is not "real food" either.

And there may already by "toxins" involved!

Thanks, guys!

Google silicone baking mat.

I've done about as much research as I can tonight and it seems as if they are FDA approved (silicone baking sheets). As was mentioned earlier they all seem to melt under direct flame. If you could get a fire started under half the grate and place the mat over the other half I don't see why it wouldn't be a nice lightweight solution to a frying pan. I'll be interested in everyone else's responses.

I love in the video that the steaks had grill marks on them. I'm sorry that would not happen if you used that mat. It would be like cooking in a fry pan, no marks. Plus the veggies thru the grill was laughable too. I use a grill basket for veggies when grilling.

I can see where this could have a place for canoe camping where grates are available. Especially at 2 for $8.95.

Well, here's more response than I ever thought I would get. Thanks, all. I just wonder if the cheaper alternative ( 2 @ 8.95) might earn a spot in the pack to try on a trip someday.

I would think they would OK over a good bed of coals as opposed to flames.

03/30/2014 04:26PM

I'm thinking multi-use like placing one against the back of your pack to keep hard items from poking you, a wind screen when cooking with a stove, using it to fan the fire, or a surface to place wet dishes after washing. Thanks Pastor. I may just get the ones Butthead posted.

I have a "SiliconeZone" mat, rated to 450 degrees but never used it in the oven, only for food prep. It is fiberglass woven core with silicon surface great for working dough/bread making. Never considered it as a grill pan replacement.
