Hi All,

Any favorites for small waterproof point-and-shoot cameras? I'm looking for something pocket sized with good battery life that will last a 5-6 day trip. It would be nice if it didn't cost and arm and a leg too.

Any thoughts on what works or what to avoid?

Thanks,

BD

I get the impression that all the major players - Olympus, Panasonic, Nikon, Canon, etc - offer a good product, although we could all nitpick details. I think you'd be happy with any of them and maybe even could pick up a discontinued one for a good price. I attached a lanyard to mine (Panasonic Lumix TS2) and wear it around my neck with the camera in my pocket. It's readily available and safe if I drop it. I bought an extra battery for mine, but ne battery usually lasts for a week trip. I usually take several hundred pictures but don't take video or use up battery battery power looking at them out there.

I have the Olympus 1030 and really like it.

Waterproof to deeper then I can dive.

Takes pics & movies underwater.

I got a Kodak Easyshare Sport on steep and cheap earlier this year. I've dunked it twice, it works. It was about 70 bucks. The only bitch I would have is, this wasn't a high quality camera waterproof or not, but I pretty much knew that. Bright sunlight, it's as good as anything else. Anything vaguely resembling low light conditions and you're gonna get some blur unless you're totally still. It's worth it to me because my wife brings her Nikon in a Pelican box and we just use mine for incidental stuff.

Targe' has the Panasonic Lumix TS20 on sale for $99. I love mine. Just don't use your credit card :)

I've had a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS4 for two years now that is still going strong and takes great pictures and videos. If you're interested I can share some pics and video to give you an idea of the quality. Also, the price really hasn't gone down at all on them since I bought mine two years ago if that tells you anything.

We ended up going with the Lumix TS25. I think Best Buy had it for abt $130, and ther reviews seemed pretty decent overall. Nice & compact. Comes in some visible colors, which could be good if you set it down in camp somewhere. Don't know about the battery life, so we ordered an extra from Panasonic just in case.

BTW, Panasonic has an awful online store. Won't tell you if backordered until transaction is done, and then they're very sketchy with info. It's good for seeing what products exist, but for purchasing they're a pain.

Thanks for all the feedback. I've got a bit of a short list going now: Lumix TS 20 and TS 25, Fuji Z33 and the Nikon S31. This last one is under $100 and seems to be reviewed about as well as the rest of the bunch. Any experience with that one?

Thanks,

Brian

I have a Nikon CoolPix AW110 (birthday present :). It is supposed to be waterproof to 59 feet, shockproof to 6.6 feet, and freeze proof to 14 F. Also supposed to have built in GPS and compass (so you have location and direction of where the picture was taken). It has not been tested swimming with the fishes (yet)

I have its predecessor. I love that its waterproof to 59 feet. Even though its orange, I doubt I could find it or free dive that deep.

Waiting for a rubber floatie that fits the camera. I hate the arm floaties.

I have a Nikon coolpixs also, took great pictures and videos !

I bought an extra battery to take in, took a couple 100 pictures and a few videos, would have been fine with one battery.

I forget what I paid for my camera, I think close to 200$

Good luck with your purchase !

This is a post Christmas reply but when shopping for the BWCA it's always Christmas, yes?

I have a Olympus TG-2 and it rocks. It takes GREAT underwater pictures and is very decent in low light. Very good battery life and I spent $14 on a back up battery which I have never used. I bet you can get a good deal on one now and it's worth it having something durable in the woods. You can see all four seasons in one day.

I also have the Nikon Coolpix AW100. Haven't tested it in the water year, but I'm very pleased with its performance.
