quote RC: "Check out the tents at this link: tents "
While they may look neat, none of these struck me as particularly useable. Not from a hiker/backpacker's perspective anyway. It doesn't look like any of them had lightening the load in mind when they were designed and created.

if nothing else this was a good demonstration of how what we do in the BW/Q is so unlike "normal camping".without going on and on about it it's safe to say that for most folks tent camping means a drive in some place, music festival, car races or the big camps where the day is spent at the beach or walking nature trails.
it's just a level trail thru the woods.

I have been investigating the hammock life for about 2 months now...doesn't seem to save any either.
I'm just here to give my opinion...If you don't like it, ignore it.

Very true. I would also like to add backpacking to the notion of not "normal camping."

There really isn't a major weight saving with the hammock. But, for about the same weight I sleep much more comfortably. And in places like BW/Q that have lots of trees, it is easier to find a place to set up.

Yep, the thing holding me back now is where to put my pack. I'm the kind of person that "needs" access to all my "stuff" through the night. Help me fix my problem...! I want to camp like Shug camps!

Minnesotian..i was waiting for the walkers to check in!
i see on Youtube some really different, for us anyway, methods of hiking.
a guy down in Texas walks the sand bar rivers to stay off private property and camp on the bars.he said in the old days folks did this to avoid hiking across all that dry open land.

Doughboy12 - put your pack under your hammock, cover everything with the tarp to keep it out of the elements and you are good to go. Just hang your hammock low enough so you can reach things in your pack without getting out.
I haven't converted but have played around with hammock camping. My biggest problem so far has been the excess weight and space. For a group of 6, bringing 2 tents, pads, and all that is needed for camping is still lighter (and significantly cheaper) and takes up less pack space than 6 hammocks with everything you need to sleep comfortably.
I have tried sleeping in my hammock and was very comfortable but I froze at night with just a sleeping pad beneath me and in a 20 degree bag when the temps only got down to about 40 degrees that night. Anywhere that was touching the hammock or pad compressed all of the insulation in the sleeping bag making it useless. I realized that you have to have an underquilt to stay warm...... great! More gear wasn't what I was hoping for but it's all part of the fun learning new things I guess.
I will keep playing around with it because it seems like a great way to sleep once you acquire everything you need and refine your gear.
