Do you guys use tree straps (to protect the tree bark from the rope/cord) for tarp setup, or only if your using a hammock. If so, what do you use?

Thanks
Bill

I use tree straps for my hammock but not my tarp. The tarp will not place near the force on the tree as the hammock will. If you do some searches on the hammockforums.net website there has been extensive discussions on this topic, some of which have links to sources supporting the posters claims.

Thanks
I don't use a hammock. Just a tarp. So if that's not damaging I will not pack anything along those lines. I will read up on that link as well .

You only need tree straps if you use a hammock. A tarp will not put the force the hammock will on trees. You are fine with just paracord on a tree.

A rope puts a tremendous force on a tree if used on a hammock. If you only use a rope with a hammock it will damage the outside layer of the tree that carries the food, and possibly kill it. I made the mistake of using a carabineer for a key ring on my hammock, it was pulled apart.

I don't use them in the summer, but I used to use webbing around the trees when putting my stake out lines out for bedding sled dogs. The webbing won't strech and is less damaging to the trees

CrookedPaddler1, could you elaborate further on "bedding sled dogs" for me?

...Sorry for the highjack...this really caught my attention.

Bill - take a look at Zing-It or Lash-it for your tarp ridge and guy lines. It is strong, light, and almost zero stretch. And doesn't cost a lot.

I use some straps from some broken ratchet tie downs. I had my wife sew a loop on each end, they work great.
