Hi folks,

I'm looking to get either the single or double walled Snow Peak titanium mug. I know both are expensive but I want a titanium one as I intend to use it backpacking as well. I'm just wondering if the double walled one is worth the extra $15. Anyone got experience with both?

Thanks!

I don't have personal experience, but I don't think the double is worth it since it is heavier. I would check out the one that comes with a lid since you will be backpacking with it and thus boiling in it. Then buy the hot lips (for when the mug gets hot instead of getting the double layer):

Snow Peak 700ml w\ lid

hot lips

But I am going to be getting the hybrid kit for myself. I will use it backpacking and want something with a wider base, as my alcohol stove has a pretty wide bloom.

I use the single wall mug/pot because I can set my cup back on the fire grate or stove to warm up coffee. You cannot cook anything in a double wall cup.

+1. This was by far the biggest reason I went with the single wall.

I have a double wall mug and it is always comfortable to hold; not hot.

I decided to go with the double wall. I spent the extra $5 and picked up the lid to go with it. I figure I can use it at work so it'll get its full use vs. the 1-2 times I'm on a trip each year.

I have both. The double wall with the cover is the best thermal mug I own. Keeps heat a long time, cool to drink from, light weight. I also use mine to do the "add boiling water and let sit" solo meals.

If you're using it for backpacking I'm going to assume you want to cook with it. If so you want the single wall. I like the trek 700 (though the lid could be improved).

Also, go to the grocery store and buy one of those Campbell's microwaveable soup cups and remove the metal ring. Extremely lightweight, insulates better than a metal cup, stays cool to the touch when filled wit hot liquids, and practically free. I keep one in the mesh stuff sack on top of my trek 700 where the extra fuel can is supposed to go. It's nice to have something for drinking when your cookpot/mug is occupied with food.

I thought about the double wall, but you can't sit it on the fire grate to keep warm. I got the Hot Lips protectors and a single wall Snow Peak 450. The 600 is just too darn big, if you're not using it as a pot

I have one of each. The double wall cannot be set over heat so once cold it does not rewarm well( I gave it to one of my sons). The single wall keeps my coffee warm for while a while, and if I need a reheat I put it back on the coals. As far as insulation, I used some neoprene as a coozie (like a beer can). it is easy to take on and off. I haven't tried a lid, yet. That looks like a good idea.

I have the double with the lid, works well. I don't have a comparison though I found a deal where the double wall was 1/2 the price of the single wall so I got the cheaper one.

We don't have a fire in the AM so rewarming is not an option, so I think overall it was a better choice for us.

Love my double-walled Ti mug - a fine piece of gear. I never have a need for reheating stuff since I consume it when it's ready, so I prefer not burning myself on the outside and having my oatmeal, soup or coffee stay hot a long time.

I think it all comes down to if you plan on going UL for backpacking and using it to cook go single wall. If not buy the double wall.

Double wall for drinking only, single wall for dual use. I made a lid for my 600ml Snow Peak single wall out of a heavy duty aluminum pie plate cut to size- crimp the edges down for a tight fit. I can fit both my stove and a 8oz fuel canister perfectly in the cup. Single walls can be too hot to drink from until it has cooled down quite a bit.

I own a double wall and two single wall 600s. I take the single walls to the outdoors as I like to heat over the flame and be able to put right on top of the stove to do a quick boil or warm up of coffee. But.. i do love the double walls too... just not as versatile, works great to keep beer cool and keep coffee hot at home or car camping.
