Headed up in late June early July for a 10 day trip. Is it worth the investment to buy a barrel for food? 60l or 30l with harness? Are their real dangers of food bags getting ripped into if not hung or even if hung during that time of year? Thanks

If you don't want to invest in purchasing a barrel then why not rent one from an outfitter. I see some rent them for only $5-10. Otherwise I see Sawtooth Oufitters has some:http://www.sawtoothoutfitters.com/pages/products/used-gear.php?cat_id=10

I'm amazed that hanging is not only allowed, but it is encouraged in BWCA. I've done it, but the sad condition of the trees around camp sites has helped me decide to change my ways, at least in BWCA.

For years I just stuffed the food pack under the canoe in the evenings. The key was to keep a scrupulously clean camp site that kept the invaders away. That said I have turned to the 60L blue barrel with a GG Vapor harness which I strap to a tree 30 - 40 yards into the woods. It works even better than hanging in a tree since you don't have to carry the extra rope or look for the perfect branch.
Watch out for that rock!!!........ Oooo.... That's going to leave a mark...
