I'm probably way off base but here's my take on the difference. Touring canoes are probably wider, more stable craft designed for leisurely exploration. A tripping canoe is narrower, sleeker, faster designed for covering water quickly.

I think the main difference is that tripping canoes are designed specifically for canoe camping; so generally they can carry more stuff without compromising maneuverability.

Good question; I have no clue, but Tripping Canoe would be a pretty cool band name.

I had a lot of friends that did a lot of 'tripping" in the 70's, Now they are into Touring.

Actually touring canoes are narrower, smaller than tripping boats.
Most builders "trippers" are the larger boats in the lineup. Bell calls theirs "performance touring" vs touring. No hard and fast guidelines, just trippers have more capacity for week or longer trips vs weekend trips of a touring boat.

If it wasn't for flashbacks I wouldn't even remember the 70's.
