The BSA troop that I am part of discovered 2 Coleman 2 burner stoves, model 414 dual fuel in their storage area. They hadn't been used in years and still had fuel in them. (Past leaders weren't very good about seeing scouts cared for equipment.) They really don't work well at all. I have tried carb cleaner. One will sort of work with a rhythmic chuffing noise, the other flares up and dies. Any ideas?

these things are bomb proof, stupid question, did you try fresh fuel?

Also, I would recommend total empty fuel tank refill with white gas, don't use gasoline. I would also make sure the pressure in the tank is high enough, and remove, clean out bore, lightly re oil, and get new pressure build up valves. When you fire up the stove, you should hear pressure coming from the tank to the burner, if you don't, the pressure could be too low. Another way is to pressurise tank seperate from stove, point away on cement, turn it on. A steady stream should shoot from the tank, nothing wimpy. Not recommended if you are smoking or around campfire or open flame, :-)

The generators are cheap and easy to replace on the Coleman dual fuel single burner stoves. I'd put a new generator on one of them, along with some fresh fuel, and it should work fine.

I put carb cleaner in the tanks, pumped them up, and let them spray out, then put fresh fuel in. Was thinking I may have to use the carb cleaner again.

Definitely agree with the suggestions to empty, totally air out, and refill with fresh white gas. Let it burn for a while to see if running clean fuel through helps. Otherwise, our experience has been that replacing the generator is usually the solution.

If you're not getting much pressure, it may be the check valve.

Unscrew the pump from the cylinder and spray a bunch of carb cleaner into the cylinder. Let it sit overnight that way.

Looks like that check valve may have a rubber gasket on it. If that is the case don't soak it in carb cleaner or lacquer thinner for a long time. It could eat that rubber gasket.

I am from near LaCrosse. Thanks for the offer. They have two working white gas stoves, a two and a one burner. Due to BSA regs, they normally use propane stoves, but needed the white gas for the cold temps. I am just frustrated with not being able to get the blasted things to work. I HATE not being able to fix things.

And these things are emminently fixable, you probably just have to hit the right combo of things to resurrect them.

My experience is the tank cap gaskets also go bad. Easiest fix for them is to replace the caps, they blead off pressure with old o-rings.
Do as others have said but also new cap if it wont hold pressure.

I agree with walleye_hunter and tonyyarusso...replace the generator.

Thanks for the info, I have a two burner Powerhouse that almost always has a small flame right were the generator goes into the manifold, still heats up ok but soots the snot out of the bottom of the pan, sounds like a dirty manifold, correct? Any other suggestions? I tried a new generator, didn't help. I have found Coleman is really great to order parts from. FRED

CB is correct as well, new caps never hurt.
